Blame it on the bossa,
By Amaranth "music fan" (Northern California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Seriously Good Music Series: Bossa Nova (Audio CD)
Bossa nova is one of Brazil's great musical gifts to the world.Who can forget Astrud Gilberto's breathy rendition of "The Girl from Ipanema"?Or Antonio Carlos Jobim's masterpieces?Or Bebel Gilberto's modern takes on the bossa nova on her self-titled album&"Tanto Tempo"?Despite all these classics,Petrol Presents goes for the Boring Bossa Nova.(Maybe the former PR man for INXS should stick to rock music instead of world music)
Roberto Menescal&Marcos Valle provide the few highlights.Marcos Valle sings the Summer Samba that Bebel Gilberto has now made famous.Aquarius,Os Cariocas,Wanda Sa (who dominates the album, with a strangely androgynous voice that could be interpreted as a feminine man like Justin Timberlake or a masculine woman like Annie Lennox)&Marcela Mangabeira provide music that would be perfect for a tropical-themed bar's background music or for a party, but as background music for anything else--it wouldn't work.It lacks the passion for a romantic evening,or the interest for writing. If you enjoy bossa nova, check out Bebel Gilberto,Putumayo's compilation "Acoustic Brazil",Suba,Ivete Sangalo or Ana Rita Simonka's Indian classical meets Brazilian bossa nova "Bossa Nova Delhi." If you enjoy Brazilian music, look elsewhere. |
