Editorial Reviews

Review

"Writer and James Beard Award-winning radio show host Worthington has authored more than 20 cookbooks. In her third "Seriously Simple" title, she offers party-planning tips (e.g., how to stock a bar and arrange a cheese plate), as well as seasonal menus and recipes for a year's worth of formal and informal occasions (e.g., Holiday Cocktail Party, Mexican Fiesta, Easy Family Dinner). Many recipes, like Butterflied Dry-Brined Roast Turkey, Meatball Sliders, and Mocha Celebration Cake, can be made in advance, allowing readers to maximize time spent with guests. VERDICT This is an inclusive and efficiently organized collection that's great for everyday cooking, not just parties." - Library Journal, Starred Review

4.0 out of 5 stars Party time October 2, 2012
Format:Paperback
This is a cookbook for parties. The recipes are not your ordinary wings or onion dip. There are some elegant party fare dishes, such as; cucumber, pea and mint soup, limoncello zabaglione with fresh berries, or prosciutto-wrapped figs with burrata and port and balsamic syrup. The dishes are not what I would classify as simple but they are not necessarily complicated and difficult recipes either.

There are menus arranged by season and events and page numbers for the dishes are given. The recipes include; beverages, appetizers, soups and salads, light entrees, seafood entrees, poultry, meat, side dishes, desserts and sweets and some basics like endamame pesto and caramelized onions. General directions on how to get ready for a party are given, what you should have in your pantry, and the different styles of parties: sit-down, family-style, pot-luck. A list of party essentials, the equipment you should have and how to stock the bar are explained.

Sidebars give some advice along the way, tips to double recipes, and suggestions on how to serve cheeses and risotto tips. Pictures are included for some of the dishes. There is an index and a chart of equivalents. Our family enjoyed braised chicken thighs with red wine and wild mushrooms, crispy duck breast with cherry port sauce, candied bacon, grilled tri trip of beef with herb rub and grilled sweet peppers, eggplant and corn.
This is a cookbook that collectors of recipes would like; there are different recipes than the normal sort one finds for parties.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worthington's 20th Cookbook--Perhaps Her Best, Ever! September 21, 2012
Format:Paperback
In the spirit of full disclosure, I met Diane Worthington more than 20 years ago when we both appeared on our own programs for many years on KABC Talkradio in Los Angeles. Long before I met Diane, I had been cooking from THE CUISINE OF CALIFORNIA for years and was already a huge fan. I own nearly every one of her 20 stellar cookbooks, and bought her latest, SERIOUSLY SIMPLE PARTIES at a big event in Northern California in May where she was the Celebrity Cooking Expert and dazzled the audience with making delicious appetizers that were simple but had a very large "wow" factor. The PARTIES book is absolutely one of her best. I've made nearly every one of the recipes, and as always, the ingredients ARE "seriously simple," fresh and totally enticing, but more importantly for busy people, her instructions are clear, concise, and easy to follow. Not only are the recipes themselves great, but in this PARTIES book, she offers menus for everything from a weekend family and friends lunch get-together, to a full-on holiday party, and even an unforgettable Super Bowl Sunday lunch, suggesting everything--literally--from nuts ("Warm Sweet & Spicey") to Brownie Toffee Cookies to finish. There are great wine spritzers, great appetizers, and--worth the price of the book itself--"The Party Pantry"...a list with descriptions of the things to keep on hand so you can swing into action whenever someone says, "Let's par---teee!" I LOVE this book, just as I loved the earlier SERIOUSLY SIMPLE--along with my other personal fav SNOW COUNTRY COOKING.
