5.0 out of 5 stars 2/25/1958, the place: Manhattan Towers NYC, result=magical, March 25, 2000

this simply is the crowning achievement in the discography of Jimmy Smith. This is one of those rare dates where everything seems to connect among all the players involved, the title cut inspires Lee Morgan, Tina Brooks, and Kenny Burrell to play some of their finest solos, and allow Smith and Art Blakey to create some superb interplay. "Au Privave" is a standout track as well, 15 mins of hard bop at it's finest, and "Lover Man", as well as "Flamingo" are top rate ballad features for Lou Donaldson, and Lee Morgan respectively. The album sums up the type of dates Jimmy recorded throughout the mid 50's. Fortunately, Smith, Blakey, Brooks and Donaldson, sans Morgan and Burrell(Eddie McFadden held the guitar chair) went into Smalls Paradise on April 7, 1958 to record more rewarding music(issued on the rare Blue Note album "Cool Blues"), thus another document of these men's collective genius.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super-Chill Funky Stuff!, May 11, 1999

Amazing album....all laid-back, funky, swinging boppy stuff. The twenty-minute jam on Sermon is soooo nice, and swings the whole time, without ever feeling tired or overdone. Jimmy, Lee Morgan, and Kenny Burrell take groovalistic solos throughout the entire album. Plus, two great Charlie Parker tunes (Au Privave and Confirmation) are excellent. This music is simply FUN. You can tell the players all had a great time making it, and it will no doubt put a smile on yer ugly face!

5.0 out of 5 stars Preach it Jimmy, Preach it., June 17, 1998
This review is from: Sermon (Audio CD)
This CD is suh-wheet. If you like Jazz, or even think you might like Jazz, this is a must have. It's one of those great Sunday morning, sunny day, put-it-on-and-kick-back kind of CDs. You will find yourself listening to it over and over again. Or humming pieces of it to yourself while you're sitting at work. Simply amazing. Amen.
