A Quick-Reference Guide to Life's Daily Problems,
By
This review is from: Sermonsnacks (Paperback)
Every minister has a ton of notes. There are certain verses we tend to turn to that help us counsel others. Don Collette took some of his favorite verses that he uses to teach and counsel and put them into his book, SERMONSNACKS. This delightful book serves as a quick reference source for anyone who counsels others, even those seeking guidance that may not have a minister to turn to.
There are nine main subjects here. Faith Building covers topics for when we need a closer walk with God. Pain Relieving for when we must deal with loss. Loneliness for when we forget that God is with us always. Work for when we find ourselves in a difficult situation at our job. Financial to help deal with money problems that face almost everyone from time to time. Family for when there is strife within the family. Marriage to help remind us of why we chose to marry and of the commitments we have made. Finally, Senior Snacks to help guide and comfort us as we mature. The book is hardly all inclusive, but is a great starting point for where to turn when we need and forget to seek God's guidance. This is a book I will keep close by and will turn to often. This fellow Chaplain has put together a great book that I highly recommend.

Sermonsnacks offers morsels of wisdom,
This review is from: Sermonsnacks (Paperback)
I first reviewed this book as a newspaper reporter, and I must say it is a refreshing spin on the ordinary devotional book. So many of us long to make personal time with the Lord a priority, and yet a lot of us slip through the cracks.
"Sermonsnacks" is the perfect solution. There are several different types of snacks, everything from guidance on marriage to personal matters. You can find several devotionals that begin with a passage of Scripture and then Collette's thoughts on the Scripture. If you need a simple reminder of God and his love for you each day, "Sermonsnacks" more than does the trick. If offers the personal morsels of wisdom we all need!

"The answer to every situation I came across could have been found in God's Word.",
By
This review is from: Sermonsnacks (Paperback)
Following a long stretch of emotional trauma a year or two back, I struggled with both my grip on reality and my faith--something which had always sustained me in the past. "Turn to the Bible," well-meaning friends suggested as a means of coping. Easy for them to say. Little did they know the exertion picking up a Bible, let alone finding the most relevant passages to soothe my situation, required of me at that point in time.
"Sermonsnacks; Help, Hope and Encouragement for Today" is the ultimate answer to that dilemma. Divided by subject matter, "Sermonsnacks" has not only unearthed the most topical Biblical verses for a given situation, it has also applied them to everyday situations. Best of all, each devotional is one and a half pages or less, making it the perfect pick-me-up for even the busiest or most stressed Christians. Whether you're struggling with faith issues, pain issues, loneliness issues, work issues, financial issues, family issues, marriage issues or senior issues, "Sermonsnacks" will consolingly help you address them.

Powerful devotional to inspire and encourage,
By
This review is from: Sermonsnacks (Paperback)
If you're looking for help, if you're looking for hope, if you're looking for encouragement, look no further than "Sermonsnacks". This powerful devotional will inspire you along life's journey and make the ordinary seem extraordinary.
Donald Collette chose the best Scriptures and perfectly matched them with thought-provoking comments to put together a devotional that is powerful, yet easy to read. Using Scriptures from both The Message and the New International Version, "Sermonsnacks" offers help, hope, and encouragement for every facet of your life: to build your faith, for the times when you are in pain or suffering, for the times when you're lonely, and for help with work and your finances. When you seek help, hope, and encouragement in your family life, in your marriage, and in your senior years, "Sermonsnacks" will be there with words of Biblical wisdom and insightful, inspirational commentary. I will keep "Sermonsnacks" by my bedside and read it every day as part of my morning and evening prayer ritual.

A New Angle,
By
This review is from: Sermonsnacks (Paperback)
I have to credit Collette for coming up with a new angle. This book is smaller than a collection of theological essays like The Weight of Glory. So it makes it easier to read, eat, and think about. But it is not quite a daily devotional book, since it is organized along topical lines. He manages to get the best of both worlds by mixing brevity with topicality. I think it works.
This is the type of book you would give to a high-schooler or the collegiate who is leaving home of the first time. It is also the right size to fit in the glove compartment of you automobile or wife's purse. So it becomes theology on the run. The only drawback has to do with the cover. God's word as a stack of donuts??? The Logos certainly is not junk food, but the bread of life. I also found some of the punctuation to be odd. Collette would use a series of periods instead of the standard three for an ellipsis. It may be a written cue to make a dramatic pause. But on paper it looked like snail trial. Tasty daily messages,
By Armchair Interviews (Minneapolis, MN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sermonsnacks (Paperback)
Since we sometimes have only a minute or two during the busy course of our day to give to God's word instead of the time we need to devote to it, Don Collette has written SermonSnacks.
With different sections, including: --faith building snacks --pain-relieving snacks --snacks to help with loneliness --work snacks plus more, Collette finds portions of scripture, usually from The Message or NIV, although a few are from the KJV, along with a short portion of thoughts to go with the scripture. These are not uniform in length; some are only a sentence or two, while others are a couple paragraphs or even a whole page. No matter how much time you have, and what your circumstance is, you will find a Sermonsnack in here to fit your time and need. I was IMing a friend, and while waiting for her to reply, read several pages of this devotional. It is a easy read, although I would recommend taking more time with it than I did, and letting the scripture, and the thoughts work through your thought process in order for it to bless you. Armchair Interviews says: A thoughtful gift item for others--and yourself. |
