There are two essentials for stainless cookware -- Bar Keeper's Friend and vinegar.

Bar Keeper's Friend will remove the dark stains and those bits of food that don't quite come off after you heat up water in your pan. It serves the function of a cleanser without incorporating the grittiness that can mar the finish of your stainless.

So, what's the vinegar for? Salt or other factors can create a chemical reaction with the stainless that may generate colors that bear a remarkable resemblance to the colors of an oil streak -- blue and pink stains that cannot be scrubbed off. But, put some vinegar into some water and, voila, those oil-streak colors vanish!

Between the two, you can keep your stainless looking factory fresh for years. You don't need to use both each time out -- possibly neither. The nature of what you're trying to eliminate from your pans will tell you which to use.

I couldn't find this or any BKF products in any local stores, so we had to buy it online. I got it primarily because I have stainless steel cookware, and I was having issues with that annoying rainbow/discoloration on the insides of them. Some websites said my cookware was ruined, others recommended BKF. I am so happy I tried it! Not only does it take away the stainless discoloration effortlessly, but it also works on Corningware, Pyrex, and Corelle dishes. I had stains on my Corelle plates that had been there for years. It looked like rust. One swipe of the rag with some BKF (made into a paste) and those stains are history! I collect vintage Pyrex and it took some old, grey utensil marks right off the outside of one of my colored casserole dishes. My mom uses it to clean her porcelain sink and it works better than Soft Scrub, Bon Ami, or Comet. What a great cleaner from a long-established and reputable company!

I just bought a new set of stainless steel Cuisinart pots/pans from Amazon & read the reviews about how difficult they are to keep clean. One of the reviewers suggested Bar Keepers Friend to remove the rainbow stains that form on the bottom of pots/pans while cooking. Sure enough, the Bar Keepers Friend took ALL the stains off, both inside & out. This is amazing stuff & should be recommended to everyone who has a lot of stainless steel to clean. Thanks again, Amazon.

Stinky, but works GREAT!!!! All the brown burned on oil, the black burned areas come clean (well, mostly). Really, nothing works as well as this. Smells like metal when you use it, gives my wife a headache but I'm fine with it (I just hit the fan when I use it).

We have used stainless steel cookware for years and for years I struggled to keep it looking clean and shiny. Then I discovered Bar Keepers Friend and decided to try it out; that was a truly fortunate decision as it not only works, but it works very well indeed!

Before discovering BKF I would use steel pads, 3M pads, Comet and lots of elbow grease to try and get the marks out of the cookware. I could sometimes plan on spending several minutes trying to remove the stains from the cookware.

With the BKF I wash the cookware, leave it wet and sprinkle in a small amount of BKF; I then take a paper towel and spread it all around the cookware, rubbing gently with the paper towel and then wash it out. The pan is bright and sparkling and better than I was ever able to get it before.

Previously, when using the scrub pads, I would rub so hard I left scratches on the cookware; now I'm able to do a better job in seconds where it took minutes to do an inferior job.

Another benefit of the BKF is it can be used to clean ceramic cook tops. This simplifies the clean-up process as I can now use one product to do the job it was taking two to do before and it takes much less time.

If you use stainless steel cookware and haven't tried Bar Keepers Friend do yourself a really big favor and buy some right away. You'll be happy you did!

I have been using Bar Keepers Friend for many years now and I am completely satisfied with the results. This product will clean any metal pot, sink or utensil probably better than anything else that I know of, unless you want to use an Ajax type product that leaves scratch marks. This product does not leave any abrasion marks on whatever you use it on and that includes vinyl counter tops and ceramic stove tops.

You can buy this product in nearly any store that sells cleaning products that includes Home Depot and Lowes. This company has a line of 10 or so products but the cleanser is there main product. You can buy this for a couple of bucks anywhere, give it a try.

This product has somewhat of an interesting history going back to 1882. The rest of this review is on the history of Bartenders Friend, I found it interesting and hope you do also.

Company History
Bar Keepers Friend has been manufactured in Indianapolis as a cleanser for brass ornaments since 1882. The founder formulated the smooth cleanser, and he himself peddled the product throughout central Indiana. He concentrated on places where there was an abundance of ornate metal work - the saloons of the gay 80s and 90s.

Pleased with the dazzling new shine of their copper and brass, appreciative bar keepers tagged the little man with the brown bags of cleanser the "Bar Keepers Friend." Soon folks began calling the product Bar Keepers Friend.

The news of this hard-working product spread to nearby cities, and orders began to pour into the little one-room office/plant from bartenders, restaurateurs and innkeepers. Quite naturally, they discovered that Bar Keepers Friend worked equally as well in their homes.
