Wonderful reading!,

This review is from: To Serve Them All My Days (Paperback)
I have read this book more times than I care to remember and enjoy it again, every time. Delderfield draws you in to the characters' lives until you begin to care a great deal about what happens to them. I hate to finish it every time!

I loved this book! From the first page to the last I was unable to put it down. I have read it several times since and have always been able to find something new. It is a great way to introduce a whole area that many people may not be familiar with. I recommend this book and in fact, all of Delderfields books, to anyone who wishes to investigate a whole new world.

Mr. Chips, make way for a Delderfield masterpiece,

This review is from: To Serve Them All My Days (Paperback)
I had just returned to college after spending three years in England in the Air Force when I happened upon this gem. Although I generally describe it to friends as "like Mr. Chips", this book is actually much better than it's better known predecessor. I first read this book over 20 years ago, and have regularly revisited it, like an old friend, every other year or so. From this book, I went on to try all of Delderfield's other works and he has become, by far, my favorite author. Delderfield's sweeping historical novels offer wonderful glimpses into the social turmoil that engulfed England from the turn of the century on. This book would be an excellent introduction to Delderfield for any reader, and I would highly recommend it - in fact, I may just start reading it again today!

One reviewer likened this to Mr Chips, "only better". This is true. It has more depth and the characterizations are far more real. I recommend this to any reader of historical fiction. Delderfield loved his country and wrote fondly of this love.
