Format: Paperback
This isn't a bad book, but it is somewhere in between not being all that useful to an experienced DBA looking to upgrade their skills from 2008R2, and probably also isn't all that useful to a newer or junior DBA looking to become hardcore. This reads like a lightly revised 2008R2 beginner's book. For instance, the section on Columnstore indexes is about a paragraph.

Notably absent would be some of the topics Microsoft is threatening for the administration certification tests. Also there is not much mention of SSAS/SSRS... not that this advertises itself as a deep dive on those topics, but most of us DBAs end up at least in a support role for these products in setup, troubleshooting, permissions, etc.

If you need a survival guide I'd spend my greenspans on Stanek's "Microsoft® SQL Server® 2012 Pocket Consultant" (also not oriented towards certification-seekers).
