More About the Author

Hello, all, my name is Randal Root. I've been involved with programming over 20 years, and have been working with Data Warehousing and BI for more than half of that. I have my own private consulting company, NorthwestTech.org, but have also spent a few years as a consultant on Microsoft's BI projects as well.

My passion is teaching.I have been teaching for over a decade and loving it! I teach at many colleges around Seattle including Bellevue, Cascadia, Everett colleges and, of course, the University of Washington.

I love helping people understand new technology and making career changes. I think this is in part because I was a carpenter for many years and made my own career change by attending classes and reading numerous tech books. Yes, it can be done!

I hope my books help you achieve your goals!
Randal

I read through Brian Larson's books while taking SSAS and SSRS classes and studied Microsoft 70-448 self training kit (also a good reference) for preparing my MCTS examine, I wish I had read Randal's book first. This book is very easy to follow with lots of good information(tips and tricks only an experienced DBA would know). It is definitely the best BI text book I have seen so far (one book cover BI solution life cycle and includes the whole MS BI stack) and one of the must-have references for BI consultants.

It should be the first book of every BI learner.

Writer presumes that reader have nearly zero-experience on Business Intelligence but have a general understanding of SQL SERVER.

Examples are well selected and organized. Some selected T-SQL samples are valuable too. Life cycle, Big picture and BI planning is very helpful for a beginner to see a big picture!

I bought "Delivering Business Intelligence with MSS 2012" by Brian Larson, which is good reference (especially in concept explaining & Data mining demonstration) but quite more difficult to follow. This book definitely should have been read in advance.

This book tries to cover everything about SQL 2012 that is not OLTP (and it covers some of OLTP), and that includes SSIS, SSAS, SSRS, MDX, and DW. That is a very wide net this book tries to cover, and it doesn't do a very good job with any of them.

As I was reading this book, I wondered if the authors had a specific goal in mind. What segment of the SQL 2012 admin/developers were they targeting?

The book is not for the beginners, but it is not for the advanced user either. If you want to have real deep understanding of SQL 2012 BI, then this book falls short. If you want to most comprehensive, yet shallow coverage, of SQL 2012 BI features, then this might be a worthwhile buy. But then again, having a shallow understanding of SQL 2012 BI is almost as good as having no understanding.

Pros:
1)Very comprehensive coverage of SQL 2012 BI.
2)Good thought-out examples.

Cons:
1)The printouts of the GUI examples are borderline illegible.
2)Not enough depth on any subject.

I have worked through the exercises in this book -- I am delighted to report they all work and are straightforward to use! How refreshing! Plus, I like this approach. It's a hands-on cookbook and step-by-step that really facilitates learning. In addition though, it's also accompanied by what I find to be concise explanations of basic concepts in straightforward language. This is an excellent book to accompany data warehousing theory, such as Kimball's Datawarehousing Toolkit, but honestly this is the one that will really show you how it all works.

Recently I went through a business intelligence program at a local college. As going through the program took a couple of years, it was a challenge to keep all the SQL Server concepts and definitions fresh and at the forefront of my mind. This book is an excellent practice and summary of all the SQL Server BI tools, and effective for interview preparation!

This book is perfect professional and detailed instruction for Business Intelligence Solution Developer. Very easy to understand, follow and remember. I was very impressed by Randal's technique, project organization, attention to details and valuable recommendations. This book brought to me so many "Aha" moments in my current BI project. I definitely recommend this book for the BI developers with many levels of experience.

Randal's book covers all the bases for putting together a successful BI solution using SQL Server. I have used it now as the primary resource for a school project and a work project to walk me through not only the technical details of using SSIS, SSAS and SSRS, but also to help me to think through the concepts and goals of the overall project. Randal's approach and writing style were easy to understand and made both projects much more enjoyable.

Though the book is written for SQL Server 2012, I have used it for SQL Server 2008 R2, which is similar enough that I had no problem with version differences.

If you are planning to build a SQL BI solution, this is the book for you!

As usual, Amazon reviews give very little indication of the skill level of the reviewer, so let me start my review with my skill level. I've been around databases for all of my career but never actually worked as a DBA. I know a bit (just enough to be dangerous) about the principles of data warehousing,OLAP and analytics but have never actually used SSIS, SSAS or SSRS.

I am thoroughly impressed with this book. The authors have really thought it through with great examples that actually work. Not only that, but the examples are interspersed with just the right amount of theory. Everything is very well explained. I wish all computer books were written with this amount of thought and care for the reader.

If you are starting off in (MS) BI then you should definitely start with this book. I made a few false starts with online courses, YouTube tutorials, etc, and got very lost. I wish I had started with this book. I'm about halfway through and am actually enjoying the experience.
