More About the Author

Ron Gilster was born in Vallejo, California in 1947. Which is the last time he actually lived in any one place for very long at all. Ron began his computing and technology career in 1965 in the Air Force, in which he took refuge from the draft, but ended up a Vietnam vet anyway. Over the years, he has been a punch-card machine operator, a computer programmer, a systems analyst, a database manager, a manufacturing production manager, a consultant for what was then a Big 8 accounting firm, an executive in the audio/visual and telecommunications industry, a college instructor and administrator, and, oh yes, a writer.

Ron has had a number of best-selling books, including his first "A+ Certification for Dummies," "CCNA For Dummies," "Cisco Networking For Dummies," and a dozen more. He lives in Spokane, WA and continues to write at least four books per year; the latest being "MCAS: Exam Guide."

5.0 out of 5 stars All I Needed to Know, February 25, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Server+ Certification For Dummies (Paperback)
The Server+ exam is hard, very hard. I failed it the first time around because I wasn't focused enough in my studies. This book by Mr. Gilster and Mr. Glencross provided that focus and all of the information I needed to pass the test. After studying with this book, I was able to pass the test with no problems. This books presents the very techie information in a no nonsense, yet often humorous, way. There is no fluff, just what I needed to know.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great starter book for Server+, October 24, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Server+ Certification For Dummies (Paperback)
Ron Gilster and Mike Glencross have come up with an easy to read book with a little humor spread throughout with that Dummies aplomb. I found myself reading quickly through this book. This is not as meaty as some of the other Server+ books, but it does touch on all the exam objectives. My suggestion would be to use this book in conjunction with one of the other thicker books such as the Server+ Bible for more in-depth look for certain topics. The RAID and SCSI chapters were good and I also enjoyed the chapter review questions. However, the included CD with the Dummies book has many identical questions as the Server+ Bible CD and this may be due to them being published by the Hungry Minds.

4.0 out of 5 stars outdated but good, September 20, 2005
This review is from: Server+ Certification For Dummies (Paperback)
this book is a pretty typical dummies guide. i haven't taken the test yet so i can't say much. it's outdated now but since the new versions of server+ preparation guides are not yet available this is probably as good a test preparation book as you can get. i used the dummies guide for a+ certification and it was okay. lots of overlap between the a+ guide and the server+ guide--good luck to you, and good luck to me.
