Book Description

June 2004
The snow was now some fourteen inches deep upon the ground, and still falling in such thick flakes as made it impossible to see twenty yards ahead. The gloomy pine-trees closed round our steps in every direction, thick-set, uniform, endless. Except the broad chaussée, down which the artillery was lumbering slowly and noiselessly, no paths or side-tracks were distinguishable. Below, all was white and dazzling; above, where the wide-spreading pine-branches roofed out the leaden sky, all was dark and oppressive.

3.0 out of 5 stars A haunting tale, August 5, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: A Service of Danger (Paperback)
In my haste to order everything I could find by Amelia B. Edwards, I bought this book, which is really a reprint of a short story.

Frederick George Byng is an Englishman who describes himself as "a younger son of a younger branch of an ancient and noble house." In the year 1800 he joins the Austrians to fight the French, serving in Lichtenstein's Cuirassiers. This is the story of his best friend, Gustav von Lichtenstein, nephew of the commander and a brave and admirable nobleman. Gustav is the one destined for a service of danger, and we learn his fate in this haunting tale.

The format with its extra wide pages in not reader-friendly. I wish that publishers of obscure literature would use conventional time-tested formats! The text is just 18 pages with, oddly enough, a dozen blank sheets following. This reprint will probably only be of interest to Edwards' fans, but the writing is beautiful, and Edward's ability to discuss military strategy is impressive.
