I highly recommend this is purchased for any little one who shows an interest in dance. 3.0 out of 5 stars Ok - but overall a disappointment
I bought this for my daughter as she loves both sesame street and dancing. I found Paula to be absolutely obnoxious through most of this from her constant eye rolling to her not-quite-a shirt. The clips of various cultural dances were the best part.

It's all done in simple gradient steps and shows a good variety of types of dance as well as ethnic dance - well worth the import to Brighton, England.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun for all ages, November 7, 2004
I recently bought Zoe's Dance Moves for my niece's 3rd birthday. She LOVES it. The different dances keep her attention and up and moving the whole time. The nice surprize is that my 7 year old niece who thinks she is too old for Sesame Street is mesmerized by it too. She dance right along with Paula and Zoe. It nice to have a DVD they can both agree on and are up dancing to vs. sitting and watching. And as always with Sesame Street the multi-ethnicity is great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for a 4yo dance & music enthusiast!, May 31, 2003

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Some of the people who are rating this video low seem to have very young kids. I think this video is better for the older crowd - 4 and 5 year olds, perhaps. It's actually got a lot of variety and switches back & forth between showing Paula and Zoe and then showing kids from various countries dancing in costumes and music that reflect their culture. It's more of an entertainment video than an exercise video - and my daughter tends to watch more than dance. However, she likes it better every time she watches it, and dances more each time. I love it and I love Paula, too! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Educational and Fun!, February 7, 2005

Zoe's Dance Moves is a great deal of fun! Paula Abdul leads Zoe, Elmo and a class of enthusiastic youngsters in learning dance styles from all over the world in a colorful and highly entertaining program! We picked this DVD up after watching a preview of it and it is one of my little one's favorites!! He is only 17 months old but loves watching Paula teaching Zoe all these incredible dance moves!! He hops up and down on the sofa and points his fingers and yells..Elmo! Zoe!! and squeals with glee! Although the video is designed for preschoolers..little ones under 2 seem to enjoy it as well!

Paula's infectious enthusiasm and energy make the program very entertaining! She should make more videos of this nature!! There is also a nice interview with Paula about her dance influences and early years studying dance! Very educational!

A great DVD and a great value!!

5.0 out of 5 stars My 3 1/2 year old loves it!, March 8, 2003
This review is from: Sesame Street - Zoe's Dance Moves [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I highly recommend this video. My 3 1/2 year old daughter loves. She can't exactly do all of the dance moves, but she jumps up and down and dances to it. She loves Zoe and Elmo too, so it's already a favorite.

3.0 out of 5 stars Has some good points, September 24, 2007
This is a mixed bag; Paula Abdul is a lovely dancer, and is good at talking to the puppet rather than sneaking looks at the puppeteer (a common problem with celebrities talking with muppets.)

She is, however, no expert on child development, and choreographed moves way out of the preschooler range of motor skills. Heck, no dance teacher worthy of the name would give steps that complicated even to adults with no dance experience! (She is listed on the credits as one of the choreographers, not just a performer.)

As other reviewers have noted, the hip roll/grind is not something you want your 3 year old to master. The producers tried to get around its inappropriateness by calling it Zoe's Hip roll, and having Paula grunt, "This is for YOU, Zoe!" when demonstrating it. Really icky. (I do have to wonder if any of the advisors noted that perps of child abuse commonly tell the kids that what they are doing is their special little secret.)

Kids with enough motor skills to really get the dance steps don't want to watch Zoe anymore, so I don't much worry that my little girl will "get" it. And it will get the younger kids moving, even though they won't master the steps. Additionally, the clips of dances from other cultures are quite good, although grouping all "Asian" and "African" dances together seems a bit odd. Why not call it by a more specific cultural name? Or call ballet "European" just to be fair?

It's fun, it gets the kids moving, but it's not the way I would have wanted it done.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the best sesame street video, March 10, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Sesame Street - Zoe's Dance Moves [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Both my 2 year old and I found this video paled next to the others in her sesame street collection. There wasn't enough variation in characters or plot and the dance step sequences were pretty complex for the targeted audience. We made it through the whole thing once but I'm guessing that will be the only time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great exposure to the art of dance for my 1 year old!, April 1, 2003

(REAL NAME)
I bought this for my daughter when she was 13 months old to add to the rest of her Sesame Street Collection. She loves this tape the best! Zoe and Elmo are great and Paula Abdul is tolerable, but the short acts and cartoons between the dance studio scenes are just as entertaining (there's one with a young Savion Glover).

The dances include ballet, African, Asian, tap, and hip hop, but her absolute favorite is Zoe's dance, the SILLY WILLY NILLY. Whenever she knows it's next in the sequence, she gets her arms ready and starts flailing them about like Zoe.

My husband enjoys watching it as well, so we make it a family dance lesson with the three of us. It's one of those videos where the parents really have to get into it with their child. If you're not excited about it, why should your child be too? It's easy for me, since I was a H.S/college cheerleader, but I could understand why some reviews haven't been as enthusiastic.

We highly recommend it to others who want their toddlers to learn about rhythm and movement. Obviously, they won't be able to get the choreography down pat, especially the hip hop, but at least they look cute trying!
