5.0 out of 5 stars Clarolyn Maier doesn't just sing, she SINGS!!! What an amazing voice!, May 7, 2007

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Sessions (Audio CD)
A friend of mine played guitar on one of the cuts on "Sessions" and I met Clarolyn at his place a couple of years ago. She gave me a copy of her CD and I was looking forward to listening to it. Somehow, the CD got sucked into the vortex of a box of stuff that was in my car and I didn't see it again until a few months ago when I found it and finally ripped it onto my computer.

Oh - my - gawd! I was stunned.

Clarolyn has one of the most amazing voices I've ever heard. She nails every song on this CD with a style that's so smooth it seems effortless.

Okay, kill me now but I've never been much of a Streisand fan -- I admire Streisand's talent but never really connected with her. I appreciate Streisand's voice and repertoire more now than I did when I was younger, but still, not so much my cup of tea.

While I can see how some might compare Clarolyn to Streisand, Clarolyn stands firmly on her own and works her unique magic into each song. As polished and professional as she is, Clarolyn has an organic quality to her that resonates with me.

This is a CD that grows on you -- the more you listen to it, the more you'll feel the depth in Clarolyn's emotional and vocal range and her skillful interpretations of the mix of songs.

I still get chills listening to "In A Very Unusual Way."

On "Easy" Clarolyn makes yearning seem tangible -- as if you could actually hold this feeling in your hands.

"Angel Eyes" transports you into the soundtrack of a steamy film noir pot boiler where the guy on the lam and the gal with the gams will surely cross paths to no good end while the chanteuse on stage sings, "Drink up..."

Clarolyn's take on "Dindi" blows Astrud Gilberto's lovely "sedate" version out of the water. And I love Astrud's music.

Bob Dylan's "To Make You Feel My Love" is an unexpected surprise that, with Clarolyn's touch, is absolutely beautiful.

And did I mention Clarolyn is a renowned harpist which is showcased on "Autumn Leaves" and "I Remember You" and a couple other songs which reminds you that Clarolyn isn't just a great singer, but a consummate musician as well?

From Broadway to Brazil, Pop to Jazz, Standards to Originals, Clarolyn Maier's "Session" CD is an outstanding work of artistic vocal and musical achievement.

And, as the previous reviewer noted, it's a shame that a recording artist as obviously accomplished and exceptional as Clarolyn proves on "Sessions" isn't getting the credit and airplay she deserves.

As for the musician "chatter" between the songs, I find it fun and it roots this CD in a "reality" the so many over produced studio recordings lack. The camaraderie between the musicians also provides a unique insight into the recording process and, at the same time, demonstrates the level of talent that Clarolyn and her fellow musicians have.

Speaking of which, she has some amazing session guys on this CD -- legendary talents like George Gaffney (longtime accompanist to Sarah Vaughn) and Earl Palmer (Rock and Roll Hall of Fame honoree and jazz legend) and Windham Hill artist, pianist Tom Grant.

As noted above, Clarolyn not only sings these songs into the stratosphere and beyond, she's also an accomplished harpist. And she plays the piano. And she's also done quite a bit of musical theatre so you're looking at a quadruple threat here - she sings, dances, acts and has mastered a couple (or more) instruments.

I'd love to see one of Clarolyn's live performances -- word is she's absolutely amazing on stage.

I highly recommend Clarolyn Maier's "Sessions" CD to anyone who loves great music sung by a truly professional, passionate, engaging and extraordinary vocalist who not only can sing, but can take even the most well known (and covered) tunes and turn them into something wonderful, entertaining and uniquely her own.

You go, Clarolyn!
