Editorial Reviews

Featuring a stripped down sound and stabbing horn lines these underappreciated blue-eyed soul classics are ripe for rediscovery. With both albums combined here on one CD they sound just as vital and exciting as when first recorded for Capitol in the 1960s. As a master song writer, Frazier provided hits for the Hollywood Argyles ('Alley Oop'), Charlie Rich ('Mohair Sam') and the Oak Ridge Boys ('Elvira'); George Jones recorded an entire album of his compositions and other mainstream acts such as Elvis Presley and Engelbert Humperdinck kept the Dallas Frazier songs spinning. Here Frazier delivers his own renditions of the hits, as well as more material in a singular style that were picked up by other artists ('She's a Yum Yum', 'Walkin' Wonder', 'Tell it Like it Is', 'Home in My Hand'). The package is completed by Bonus original 45-only songs from the same time frame and musical genre, descriptive liner notes and hitherto unpublished photographs assembled with the co-operation of the artist. After a 20+ year lay-off, in early 2007 Frazier announced plans to once again write and record in the style of this early seminal work.

It was great, back in 2008, to finally see this CD compilation of the music performed by singer/songwriter and guitarist Dallas Frazier (born in Spiro, Oklahoma on October 27, 1939). Tracks 1 to 12 are from his June 1966 LP "Elvira" (Capitol T/ST-2552) and 13 to 24 from his July 1967 album "Tell It Like It Is" (Capitol T/ST-2764), while track 25, Tennessee Sue, was a failed single in October 1966 on Capitol 5728 and King of the Jungle b/w Make Believe You're Here With Me (tracks 26 and 27) was a failed release in June 1965 on Capitol 5444. The sound quality is first rate and it comes with informative liner notes written by Keith Glass.

Those were his only two albums for Capitol and, with one exception, preceded the five singles he put onto the national charts from late 1967 to early 1969 for the same label. The lone exception was the self-penned Elvira which, in May 1966, became a # 72 Billboard Pop Hot 100 b/w That Ain't No Stuff (also here) on Capitol 5560. The fact that it made no impact whatsoever on the Country charts is a puzzle because 12 years later, in September 1978, it became a # 95 Country for Rodney Crowell and, in April-May 1981, a smash # 1 Country and # 5 Hot 100 for The Oak Ridge Boys.

Great CD. The cover was broken when I received it, but other than that it was fine.

the guy who wrote THERE GOES MY EVERYTHING also wrote and recorded some raunchy R & B! well, let's call it Country-styled R & B or R & B-styled Country. both CDs are very entertaining.

booklet is a work of art, loaded with info. and written with style: I did not know Dallas co-wrote and sang on the monster ALLEY-OOP! I guess that success led to many excursions into shall we say, novelty-pop and these albums cover that period very well.

his singing voice - his non-Country ballad top-seeking voce is reminiscent of various Coasters singers with a touch of Roger Miller.
