a wonderful discovery, April 16, 2006
This review is from: Set Design (Audio CD)
I bought this cd after finding a promo copy of Signal Drift's first cd, "Compass". It's always a joy to discover music almost accidentally and fall in love with it. His "Compass" cd was released on the American electronica label, Wobblyhead--the same label occasionally shared by the equally awesome Erik Kowalski project Casino Versus Japan. Anyhow, after hearing "Compass", with it's drifting atmospherics and textures, Peter Hookish guitars (in some areas), and excellent beatscapes, I had to track down more of this stuff.
"Set Design" turned out to be another winner, if not possibly better than "Compass", at least as a cohesive whole of an album. Still, that's up for debate. So, we get more bitter-sweet electronic soundscapes here, not all too different from "Compass" ,yet there is a sound, a vibe reminiscent of some of See Feel's best work, though more emotional and melodic. Tracks are nicely arranged and there are the more beat-oriented pieces taking turns with the more ambient, atmospheric interludes. Track nine, called "128" is an epic masterpiece of electronic music composition--a total pleasure to listen to as beats, rhythms, and sound structures subtly shift and change for a bit only to shift gears and morph once again while still retaining a sense of similarity from beginning to end. The final, tenth track, "Dripping Angels" is a fine, almost amorphic, ethereal closer, ending this fantastic forty-five minute sonic journey.
Fans of more complex, heady, less melodic electronica (think of current Autechre material) might not dig this stuff. Then again, I could be wrong. Anyhow, as a long time listener and rabid consumer of electronic musics, I HIGHLY HIGHLY reccomend all of Signal Drift's output. This music will enhance your life and put a smile on your face, no kidding.

Sonic Scape for My New Home World, February 23, 2006
This review is from: Set Design (Audio CD)
This is music for play, while walking alone along a space station corridor, long, and lined floor to ceiling with crystal clear windows viewing a strange green world, clouds sliding across its face, wondering about my new home.
This latest sonic scape offered to us by an American Artist, Franz Buchholtz, surprised me in how quickly I came to replay it. There are certain albums that demand to be played, as albums, not as tracks. Tracks from these albums have me hitting stop on the shuffle, so I can finish the album. I go to these albums and not to genre shuffles or playlists for the mood they impart, for the way they affect my environment. These are drugs we self prescribe to alter our mental state.
This is simply one of the best new albums I've adopted in quite a long time.
