Set Free to live Free
By
Dr Saundra Dalton-Smith

I thought I knew all the negative self-talk that women indulge in and the lies we tell ourselves I had down pat. After all at age 70 it's a matter of been there done that, got the tee shirt, so what's new. Saundra Dalton-Smith's book, Set Free to live Free is new. In her book the author takes you behind the patient doctor screen to bring true life experiences, and shows the crippling effect these lies and myths have on the psyche. She herself, as she reveals was not immune, so this is also her story as well as yours and mine and so many countless women.
So we know the score, but how do we get free. A God-given intuitive gift allows Dr Dalton-Smith to probe beneath the surface of the problems presented to dispense a prescription based on biblical truths, facts and a ministry of encouragement that empowers the patients to replace the lies with truth.

As I poured over this book, and I must warn you it is not a onetime sit down and read kind of a book, it takes time to read study, digest and act upon the information. But as I went through the book, I had to stop and take notes, which I placed in strategic places in the book so that I could go back and reference the sections. It was sort of like doing a Bible Study and truly a great amount of truth was revealed and a lot of healing and help. I felt that I had gained victory over a number of things because they no longer were a part of my life, but as I read Set Free to live Free, I found that there was still tension in some areas of my life that needed to be released if I was to truly gain the victory I deserved in life and in Christ. One such situation was in relation to emotional pain.

Ever feel like you didn't measure up somehow? Perhaps you might struggle with self esteem issues, or perhaps your the person that looks at life as an all or nothing deal, or if you have ever felt like your not good enough then this book is definitely for you. In Set Free to Live Free, Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith brings to light and shows us how to break free from the seven mental ties that often keep women from reaching their full potential, in essence robbing them of fulfillment and joy.
The seven lies are:
1.Perfection
2.Envy
3.Image
4.Balance
5.Control
6.Emotions
7.Limits
She uses short stories to share examples of the lies we either tell ourselves, or that have been told to us so often that we believe them. I like that fact that she says that freedom is a choice, and while faith and prayer is an element of change, teaching that for each lie that there is a Bible based promise to release us from that lie, she also encourages to really make a difference we must change ourselves to break free from the lies we have been bound by.
This book is written in a clear and concise manner, and is very easy to use. The eight week study guide included in the back would make this book perfect for women's study groups, but it is also a great tool to use individually. I think all women would benefit greatly from this book.

I really appreciated as I reading Set Free to Live Free that I never once encountered a section that used the word prayer without also stating in one form or the other that effort must also be involved if you truly want to bring about change with your life. Prayer is often held up in many Christian self-help books as a magic wand that suddenly changes your life.

Dr. Dalton-Smith acknowledges that we have to change ourselves and that our faith will help us overcome as we work towards being the people God meant us to be instead of limiting ourselves by creating lies to operate our lives within.

This book is very, very real and practical - there are no frills and no band-aids offered every other sentence. This makes the book very good for those of us who lead busy lives as adults and really do not want to be talked down to by someone who is writing a book that is supposed to offer help and strength. Strength is tough! The author understands that.

Beyond the above comments that defined the book for me, I will say that the volume was very well organized, well-written and full of nuggets of wisdom in every of the seven lies. Even if you do not need to work through one of the particular lies, you will likely find a few good thoughts to carry with yourself.

Disclosure: I received a review copy of this volume through the publisher.

I loved this book! I have had it on my "to read" list for a long time and yet God knew the perfect time for me to read it. God used a story Saundra told in the beginning of the book about one of her patients to identify some roots to some issues I've been having. Even though it's hard to allow God to do the deeper healing, it is worth it!

I really liked how she organized the book as well with the five stages of freedom:

1) Illumination - Peak inside yourself
2) Activatioin - Change is hard work and it may involve sweat
3) Transition - Stretched to the max but rebounding with grace
4) Expulsion - dynamic interference required
5) Detatchment - cut the ties

In the illumination sections, she often lists questions to ask yourself. These are questions that I can refer back to in the future as well. And I especially liked the expulsion section where she lists out truths from the Bible and the references. These are lists that I can refer back to again and again.

Great book and highly recommended!
