Book Description

Henrie O Mysteries March 25, 2008

Though retired newspaper reporter Henrietta O'Dwyer Collins, Henrie O to her friends, once turned down a marriage proposal from Jimmy Lennox, he's still one of her most cherished friends. So when he asks for her help on behalf of his wife, world-famous documentary filmmaker Sophia Montgomery, Henrie O reluctantly agrees to join them on a Baltic cruise. Sophia is the stepmother to the now-grown heirs of a great fortune, who are none too happy that she controls their inheritance. But do they really want her dead? Jimmy thinks so, and he wants Henrie O to prove it.

On the cruise, Henrie O soon realizes that this dysfunctional family is plunging toward destruction. As the ports of call pass—Copenhagen, Gdynia, Tallinn, St. Petersburg—death inexorably approaches. But Henrie O discovers that love, once kindled, never dies. When Jimmy is accused of murder and time is running out, she pursues a clever killer who won't hesitate to strike again.

Carolyn Hart writes the Death on Demand series set in a mystery bookstore on a South Carolina sea island and the Bailey Ruth Raeburn series featuring a lively redheaded ghost. Coming in 2012 from Berkley Prime Crime will be DEATH COMES SILENTLY, 22nd in the Death on Demand series, and WHAT THE CAT SAW, fist in the series featuring Nela Farley who has an uncanny sense of cats' thoughts.

She is also the author of several WWII novels, including ESCAPE FROM PARIS which is now available for the first time in its complete uncut version. Escape from Paris is the story of two sisters who defy the Gestapo to help British fliers avoid capture.

In Ghost at Work, Bailey Ruth returns to earth to help someone in trouble. She moves a body, investigates a murder, saves a marriage, prevents a suicide, and--in a fiery finale--rescues a child who knows too much. In Merry, Merry Ghost, Bailey Ruth protects a little boy from danger. In Ghost in Trouble, Bailey Ruth tries to corral a wilful woman determined to play hunt-the-killer. Coming in 2013 is HIJACKED GHOST which puts Bailey Ruth at risk of ever returning to Heaven.

Letter from Home, a WWII novel set on the home front, received the Agatha Award for Best Mystery of 2003. It was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize by the Oklahoma Center for Poets and Writers. Thirteen-year-old Gretchen Gilman is working for the small-town newspaper during the hot summer of 1944. Murder occurs on the street where she lives, forever changing her life and the lives of those involved.

Hart was one of 10 mystery authors featured at the National Book Festival on the Mall in Washington, DC, in 2003 for Letter from Home and again in 2007 for Set Sail for Murder, 7th in the Henrie O series. In Set Sail for Murder (new in paperback March 2008), Henrie O joins a troubled family on a Baltic cruise and death is an unwelcome passenger.

Hart has been nominated 9 times for the Agatha Award for Best Novel and has won 3 times. In 2007 she received the Lifetime Achievement Award at Malice Domestic. She will be the International Guest of Honor at Bloody Words in Toronto on June 6-8, 2008.

5.0 out of 5 stars Henrie O Returns Triumphantly, August 24, 2009

This review is from: Set Sail for Murder (Henrie O Mysteries) (Mass Market Paperback)
Henrie O hasn't heard from her old friend Jimmy Lennox is years. But when he calls out of the blue, Henrie can't resist helping. Seems his wife Sophia has narrowly escaped death once and maybe twice. Now Sophia is leaving on a Baltic cruise with her step-children, who also happen to be the prime suspects in Jimmy's mind.

Henrie agrees to join the cruise, although no one seems to buy the coincidence of her being on board the ship with them. As things progress, Henrie learns that there is little love lost between Sophia and her step-kids. But could the old pain be enough to drive one of them to murder? Or is the motive a more recent hurt? Might their trust funds have something to do with it? Can Henrie figure it out in time to save Sophia's life?

This book was the first to star Henrie O in six years, and she has only gotten stronger for the absence. I was hooked from very early on and had a hard time putting the book down, and blew through it in just a couple of days. The characters were strong enough that I didn't have to refer back to the chapter where they were all introduced like I often have to in this series. I did have the ending figured out before Henrie, and the last 100 pages did seem a tad slow at times, but that is a minor complaint.

This is a strong, fun mystery from one of the best mystery writers in the business today. If you enjoy your mysteries on the lighter side of things, this is absolutely the book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging!, July 10, 2009
This review is from: Set Sail for Murder (Henrie O Mysteries) (Mass Market Paperback)
Carolyn Hart's long-awaited seventh installment in the highly popular Henri O series after six years takes you on a exotic and opulent cruise. The book kicks off with spunky retired journalist Henri O receiving a phone call from dear friend and one time lover, Jimmy Lennox.Jimmy's wife glamorous world-famous documentary film maker, Sophia, has been barely escaping some weird "accidents " that she just shrugs and shakes off as coincidence. Jimmy fears for his wife's safety and pleads with Henri O to join them on a family cruise to the Baltic that will determine what Sophia will do with her step children from her second husband's inheritance.Henri O reluctantly agrees to join the family, but knows Jimmy would come to her rescue if ever there was a need. Sophia's scheming step children loathe her for controlling their money. As the voyage sets sail we are given a wonderful description of the ports of call and the luxuriant cruise ship. I truly enjoyed my two week cruise with the lovely Henri O. It was my first Henri O book and I am anxious to read the series from the beginning. It was well-written, well-plotted and a delight to read.As a diehard fan of her Death on Demand series I was highly impressed with getting to know this charming, fiesty, humorous character. The one thing I love about picking up a book by Hart is her vast use of vocabulary.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful as always, March 17, 2009
This review is from: Set Sail for Murder (Henrie O Mysteries) (Mass Market Paperback)
As always, Carolyn Hart writes a great story involving the adventures of Henry O. This book did not disappoint me. The only problem I had with the book is that is was not long enough.

I am glad that Henry O came back for a visit. I hope to see her again soon. She is one of my favorite characters of all time.
