5.0 out of 5 stars This is new. This is good., March 5, 2007
This review is from: Set Sail the Prairie (Audio CD)
This album is a spectacular piece of work. On Kaddisfly's EP, a couple of the songs felt out of place and even a bit awkward. But on "Set Sail the Prairie" everything works. Each song acts as a movement to compliment the whole. "Winter Solstice" serves as an appropriate intermission after the catchy "Empire" and is followed by "Snowflakes" which brings back memories of smoke and the Dark Side. Even though the sound gratefully takes the appropriate influences from Incubus and Floyd, any borrowing serves only as a polite nod, and as a listener can only make me smile and share in Kaddisfly's appreciation and thanks to such muses.
"Set Sail" is truly an album to make a listening event out of, and Kaddisfly puts on just as good of a show. They are opening for the Take Action tour with Red Jumpsuit Apparatus right now, and the event is highly recommended. Get tickets and make sure to get there early enough to see these guys. They have broken the mold, and if America's listeners can break their own molds enough to realize that "emo" is an expired, naive label, then Kaddisfly will get the respect and appreciation that they deserve.

5.0 out of 5 stars ............wow, April 2, 2007
This review is from: Set Sail the Prairie (Audio CD)
I've been a huge fan of dredg for many years, and on a fan message board, www.traversingboard.com , I heard multiple times about a band called kaddisfly. After repeatedly seeing the name and the reviews I decided to check them out on myspace and the songs listed were amazing. I purchased this album two days ago and I have only put it down to sleep and to work. Starting off with a little `welcome' type song "summer solstice", the album instantly starts up with "campfire", almost with an Incubus type vibe. The rest of the album is just beautiful, as it puts you on a rollercoaster of sounds... some songs are so beautiful that they can put you to sleep, but can quickly change into a rush of head banging guitar riffs. I've only heard better about their earlier release. I will definitely be checking that out and I will definitely see them if they come in the area. Must buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enough with the "post-hardcore" Incubus, March 16, 2008
This review is from: Set Sail the Prairie (Audio CD)
This is Kaddisfly, a band that deserves a lot more than direct comparisons to the mega popular band Incubus. If people can't get past the fact that the singer sounds somewhat similar to Brandon Boyd, than I'm sorry you are not a good listener. Kaddisfly creates sweeping, textured music that captures your mind, body, and soul (for real). Great mix of muscular, and subtle sounds from the musicians. The vocals however are incredible, impressive falsetto's, and sometimes powerfully intense. Not to mention the wonderful 12 month concept album (every song represents a month), which progresses perfectly.

man, this album's good. precisely 'how good' has changed over the course of the years and the number of listens. you've heard it said: this is one of those albums that gives back what you put in. this is not SAOSIN, people- despite sharing a similar fanbase- and i'm not ripping on SAOSIN. i think they're great. but this is not an album that has you singing along to the choruses by the third listen. _set sail the prairie_ is challenging. but of course, challenging albums have the habit of securing years of continued play, right? _set sail the prairie_ by KADDISFLY is not unlike something SAOSIN might create, to an extent; but unlike most SAOSIN creations, _set sail the prairie_ is far from linear. instead, there's some free space here, some neat little interludes, some progressive-rock tendencies, as KADDISFLY takes to working out the sheer weight of their musical concepts. half of the songs are at least five minutes in length. but _set sail the prairie_ is built to impress the honest critic, and built to sing-along to... eventually. in the mean time, though, _set sail the prairie_ offers tight, high-energy indie rock that's artistic and gainfully complex. but even after the first listen, i think two things are made certain: one, these guys can play; and two, they were never destined to play to mostly teenage girls. another thing i appreciate about _set sail the prairie_ is how it doesn't play to my expectations. based on some of the musical stylings of the band, i might expect them to have a really "emo" sounding vocalist, but that's really not the case. though i believe he could appeal to an emo band looking for a new singer, this guy sounds quite fresh.

5.0 out of 5 stars Art and music combined, April 1, 2009
This review is from: Set Sail the Prairie (Audio CD)
I had never heard of Kaddisfly, up until about a year and a half ago. A friend of mine, who is a prog. rock freak, had happened to stumble upon them. Now, after listening to the album plenty of times, I can say that this band has infused music and art in such a way that it inspires and amazes. I won't go into detail, but I will say what the other reviewers have said:
All the songs have their own rhythm, all of them follow separate "stories", making them all unique. Each one has a certain "feel", whether it be earthy and hot, or cold and wet, you feel what the band tries to say through the lyrics and the sounds. Truly, a work of art that I will listen to until they release a new album... :D Good job, guys! 5 out of 5

5.0 out of 5 stars incredible cd/live show, September 29, 2007
This review is from: Set Sail the Prairie (Audio CD)
these guys are amazing. intense live show and the band is straight up awesome dudes. lyrics/music are exactly like people describe, beautiful art. intelligently written and sung, and completely original in sound, all types of styles incorporated. the tracks flow together like a journey, something they intended to do when they recorded. the first couple of songs alone will get you hooked. Kaddisfly is so fresh in what they do and how. the breakdowns really get you. cant say enough good things about them. precisely what music needs, such an inspiring concept of the album and naming of songs. if you like creative and artful lyrics sung creatively to catchy music (so many styles from complete ambience to rock, to jazz, to lounge), this is for pretty much any fan of good music. progressive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must listen!, June 21, 2007

Very interesting album...difficult to describe. Good lyrics, not just mindless drivel. Kind of progressive without being too weird. Reminds me a little of Incubus at times, also sorta reminds me of Coheed & Cambria. Pretty energetic for the most part, won't put you to sleep. Clean vocals, good melodies. If you only listen to 3 songs, I recommend: Campfire, Via Rail, and Empire.

4.0 out of 5 stars When will the world know about K-Fly and respect them!, June 14, 2007
By

This review is from: Set Sail the Prairie (Audio CD)
Kaddisfly championed me over a chat with a friend online. My friend and I were into the whole dredg/circa survive, prog-experimental-post stuff that time (still is). I was telling my buddy to check out Paulson when he told me to check out Kaddisfly. I've heard of the name before through all my news gatherings through theprp.com and decided to check it out. The rest is rock n' roll history man...

I have to say, Set Sail The Prairie took a few more days and sunny drives to grow on me than Buy Our Intention..., but that's the K-Fly style: they grow on you bad...REALLY BAD. I remember making Buy Our Intention my BART/MUNI train companion for weeks on end. Set Sail has been playing in my car ever since it came out.

There are way less hardcore/metal touches on this new album, but oozes with great instrumentation and melodies.
I guess it is more "pop-y," if by pop you mean great, great melodies that won't leave your head.
I remember a conversation I had with their singer, Chris, after a show in San Francisco a couple of years back. I told him how I appreciated the time changes and all the experimentation they do, and asked him about the then upcoming new album. He said, "It's gonna get EVEN WEIRDER man!"

Set Sail The Prairie did get weirder, and better, and more epic than all these new bands are doing these days. Songs like "Via Rail," "Birds," and "Forrest" bring you to another world. "Silk Road" is such an eye-closer it should be their next single...and would surely launch their careers to new heights. Incubus guitarist, Mike Einzinger, should jot down some notes and listen to "Waves," "Harbor," and "Clockwork"...cuz Kaddisfly are doing what fans wished Incubus would do these days.

Set Sail The Prairie is a highly welcomed departure from Buy Our Intention... that will surely tickle your ear drums the right way. It is full of cloud-like ambience (either blue skies or heavy rain), groovin rhythms, earth shattering guitars, soaring vocals, and a sky-full of hope.

It is indeed a great road trip record.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best albums....ever, May 8, 2007
This review is from: Set Sail the Prairie (Audio CD)
Kaddisfly is an extraordinary band that combines elements ranging from all over the scale of music genres. Buy Our Intention... was an excellent album but as even the band had said it was way too broad and didn't define them as a band. The album was kind of all over the place and they wanted to create something that would take the parts from that album and add a new twist to create an album that would 100% represent who they are. Well Set Sail The Prairie is just that. What I really like about the album is that it really does take many listens to sink into what this album offers.
Set Sail is probably the best concept album idea I've ever seen and it just works perfectly. Each song is represented by a month of the year as well as a location. The album is as if you are taking a journey mapped out by Kaddisfly and each song is a journal log of what feelings and thoughts occur at each place. It really is brilliant and makes the album more fun to listen to. The lyrical content in the album is unlike anything I have ever seen before because the band relates everything to nature and uses beautiful metaphors and imagery.
The first half of the album is during the summer months and take place in hot sunny locations. After Birds which takes in Gabon you move from Africa to Israel in Clouds which then takes you to Empire which is set in Russia. This is when the colder months begin to take effect.
This album truly showcases everything the band is about and trust me....they are about sucking the listener in and never letting them go.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Discovery Of Mine, May 28, 2007

This review is from: Set Sail the Prairie (Audio CD)
I have heard of Kaddisfly ever since their "Buy Our Intention; We'll Buy You a Unicorn" album came out. I never really bothered to give it a listen. When I heard that they had a new album coming out, I figured I'd give it a try. What I didn't know was how much I was going to enjoy it. I haven't heard too much of "Buy Our Intention", so I really can't say if they've changed drastically or not. I love Chris' voice and his lyrics. It's got that whole post rock/experimental thing going, but its a little bit "poppier" I guess you could say. They use a lot of delay effects which is common in the post rock genre. They kind of remind me of Circa Survive, but more poppy and of course different vocals. If you like bands such as Moving Mountains, Circa Survive, Explosions in the sky, God is An Astronaut, or any other band relating to that genre, you should definitely give this a try. It's really relaxing as well.
