4.0 out of 5 stars Dear Diary.......
Expressed in the interesting format of a personal journey, Mallori McNeal has written a page-turning novel. Before reading the story in 1st person, the author gives the reader a backdrop with a written prologue to give an introduction to the story.

Mina, using her street instincts, willingly takes the road to insanity to avoid the general prison population...

I liked this book. I love how the character grew. The Set-Up wasnt much of a set up but whatever.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dear Diary......., November 25, 2007
This review is from: The Set Up (Triple Crown Publications Presents) (Paperback)
Expressed in the interesting format of a personal journey, Mallori McNeal has written a page-turning novel. Before reading the story in 1st person, the author gives the reader a backdrop with a written prologue to give an introduction to the story.

Mina, using her street instincts, willingly takes the road to insanity to avoid the general prison population designated for drug offenders.

While incarcerated in the prison mental institution, Mina has strange dreams which are actually an insight to her future, although the exact events are not exactly as she dreamed about.

Eventually after 3 years of imprisonment, Mina is released back into society as a free woman under the watchful eye of her probation officer.

Accepting life's circumstances and her current conditions, she slips into the role of a "goodie two shoes".

While playing the role to satisfy her 5-year probation requirement, she meets up again with the love of her life - "Kayne" - and now begins "the set up".

The drama builds, conflicts and complications arise and Amina is the catalyst of it all.

It's not my wish to ruin the story for you, but if you want a book worth your time, this is a one to get.

4.0 out of 5 stars She's Back.........., January 1, 2008
This review is from: The Set Up (Triple Crown Publications Presents) (Paperback)
In this sequel to Down Chick Amina is back and she is back to claim her man. She will do anything just to have him in her arms. Even if that means getting in close to the chick Kayne is suppose to marry and about to be the mother of his seed. With so much dirt that she has on Kayne main squeeze she puts her plan in action to show Kayne what he has at home is all a lie and that in her arms is where he needs to be. With Amina having two identiy and all hell about to break lose once Kayne's fiancee finds out who her best friend really is we are sent into a all out book full of drama

I have to say that Mallory did a job well done once again. Even though on the first novel you could tell that she was a new author. But I feel that she has really got her writing game down now.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Definite Shakedown, December 3, 2007

When a person is devoted to someone, the valleys they are willing to
travel are endless. The mountains they are willing to climb, in their
eyes, only makes them a stronger couple. That is exactly how Amina
feels about Kayne in The Set Up by Mallori McNeal. This sequel to A
Down Chick has her plotting on how to get her life and her man back.
At times the way she feels for him devastates her world, but the
instances where her love for him empowers her is what keeps her going.

When Amina returns home from doing two years in jail, she learns that
Kayne has moved on. Something inside of her does not want to believe
it and so begins her search for a definite answer. The information
she obtains has the potential to threaten her paroled freedom as well
as her sanity. Will Amina be able to have the man she cannot live
without? Or will her scheming blow up in her face? Remember, she was
a down-chick but will she continue to be?

The Set Up is fast-paced and action-packed. There was so much drama
that I could not put it down. There are two parts in the story that I
felt were slips of the pen and because it would give away too much, I
cannot put exactly what it was in this review but it is
mention-worthy. McNeal's character development is good, though I
would have loved to read more about Zelle, who is Amina's brother, and
Kayne's involvement with each other. Overall it is another great
addition to the Triple Crown family and urban fiction readers will not
be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Cost of a New Life, January 29, 2008
By
The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers (RAWSISTAZ.com and BlackBookReviews.net) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Set Up (Triple Crown Publications Presents) (Paperback)
Amina is serving a twenty-one year sentence in jail, but in three years she is a free woman. Back on the streets she is determined to start a new life, but there is some unfinished business she must handle before she can move on. What happens next creates Mallori McNeal's novel THE SET UP, the sequel to A Down Chick.

Fresh out of prison Amina returns to her hometown, her family, and friends. She has a new apartment, a new job and a new look. On her first day at work she sees that Kayne, the man she was doing time for, has moved on and started a new life. Amina hopes to prevent his new life from moving forward. Determined to get her man back at any cost, Amina crafts a plan to get next to his new girl, Marla. But having Kayne by her side is not enough so with the help of her
friends, she goes after someone close to Marla. In the end, Amina is able to move on with her life but at a great cost to the lives of others.

THE SET UP is a fast-paced novel that centers on love and revenge. It is a well-written and the storyline flows smoothly. McNeal mixes enough information from the past with what is going on in the present so those who have not read the first novel (like me) won't be lost. Instead, I was intrigued with each of the characters and their choices and wanted to know what was going to happen next.
There was one question I had at the end of the novel which caused me to wonder if there will be a sequel, but even if there isn't I am content with how the novel ended. If you are looking for a fast-paced novel that will keep you guessing what the main character is going to get into next, then give THE SET UP a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars SHE'S BAAACK!!!!, February 11, 2008
This review is from: The Set Up (Triple Crown Publications Presents) (Paperback)
AMINA IS BACK!! AND MORE CRAZIER THAN EVER. SHE'S FRESH OUT OF JAIL. LOOKING TO START HER LIFE OVER AGAIN. ONLY FIND THAT HER MAN IS WITH SOMEONE ELSE. MINA THEN HATCHES A PLOT TO GET HER MAN BACK AND FIND THOSE WHOM SET HER UP. ALL I HAVE IS "WATCH OUT" TO WHOEVER GETS IN HER WAY.

THE AUTHOR AND CHARACTER SHOWED A LOT OF GROWTH SINCE THE LAST BOOK. AS DID SOME OF THE OTHER CHARACTERS FROM 'DOWN CHIC', ESPECIALLY HER MOTHER. I ALSO LIKED THE NEW CHARACTER ANDREA AKA (BUTTA) AND WONDERED IF THE AUTHOR CONSIDERED TELLING MORE OF HER STORY.

ALL IN ALL I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK. EXCELLENT READ

This was an excellent part 2. I like books like this, that ends with a happy ending. It was messed up how Amina, went about getting her man back. But she got him back and the book ended perfect.. I know there is going to be a part 3, because Marla bit him and I know part 3 is going to be even better. Mallori, you have a bright future ahead of you. Keep putting books out like this and one of them will become a movie... Good luck to you.
