Sony has a vault of Byrds recordings and this was the best they could do? Unlike the "Setlist: The Very Best Of Mountain" that contained previously unreleased material, the Byrds collection has neither the "best" or any new material. How do you call it "The Very Best Live" without versions of Mr. Tambourine Man, Turn Turn Turn, or So You Want To Be A Rock'N'Roll Star? Purchase Sundazed's "Live At Royal Albert Hall 1971" instead.

When I first cracked open this album, I must admit to having been terribly disappointed. It claims to be "The Very Best of the Byrds Live" and yet contains so few of the great Byrds hits. As time went on, though, the album did begin to grow on me. The remastered tunes sound very good, and are great to listen to.

If you don't have any live Byrds albums, then this is definitely the best album to start with. But, if you want a nice addition to your already well represented Byrds library, then you will probably be pleased with this disc.

Mostly these tracks are from Untitled and Fillmore '69, but the improvement in sound quality is miraculous and worth 5 stars. "Mr. Spaceman" and the Fillmore tracks especially shine; vocals often distant on the originals are crisp here, and Clarence White's guitar blindingly beautiful. The wide stereo separation on "This Wheel's on Fire," "Time Between" and others at the Fillmore give White's guitar it's own track. How they did this I have no idea, but wish Untitled and Fillmore '69 were remastered to sound like this.

Two gripes. The transitions between songs is clumsily done, with erratic bursts of applause and a "stitched together" feel that destroys any sense of a real concert. Second, the Eight Miles High jam is a little faster to my ear. I've compared it to Untitled; while it's hard to put a finger on the difference, I prefer the original. Even though the the sound is so much better here.

Wish they could clean up the Albert Hall '71 like this too.

This is worth buying if only to hear for yourself what can now be done with this material.

There are a lot of bootlegs out there I've never heard, but if this CD shows how they could be made to sound.... whoa.

As the previous reviewer said, "Is this the best they could do?" Loads of Byrds tapes exist, including one taped at the Whisky in LA in 1966 that have not seen the light of day yet. Enough with these useless rehashes; give us something worthwhile. In addition to the Whisky show, how about something with Gram Parsons, or the Legendary Byrds/ Burritos jam from the Boston Tea Party in 1969.C'mon Sony, open those vaults! Save your money until then.

I will say this not The Byrds we know from their days of performing Turn,Turn,Turn, and other pop friendly hits. This is the version of the band in the late 60's and 70's the band being more of a Hippie-folk jam band. This CD consists of deeper tracks and also they perform alot of Bob Dylan songs as well I enjoyed is CD and they do a decent job of performing all tracks. The songs that I like are This Wheels of Fire,Chimes of Freedom both of these Bob Dylan songs the Ballad of Easy Rider is on here, which was a some what popular song for them and Eight Miles High is on here, but it is pretty much a 10 min. jam song, if you are looking for a Greatest Hits live by the Byrds, you might want to keep looking, this material was recorded in different cities and different times of their career.

Byrds "Setlist: Very Best of Live" CD - track-list question
From what I understand it is pretty much a mash up of the Fillmore '69 and Royal Albert Hall .71 CDs.
