For many people, food and weight loss are some of the daily battles that we fight. It's true in my own life and we see it in the billion dollar weight loss industry. Years ago I wrote a bestselling diet book and my co-author (the diet expert) told me, "Losing weight comes down to eating less and exercising more."

Allison Bottke knows from personal experience the struggle with weight loss and the steps necessary to gain control over this area of life. SETTING BOUNDARIES WITH FOOD engages you from the opening page with practical information and step-by-step advice to make change in your life. As Bottke writes, "Talk is cheap. It's one thing to say we want to set healthy boundaries with food, but it's another thing entirely to commit to change and doing the necessary work to embark on a journey that will transform our lives. Actually implementing the Six Steps to SANITY is a decision that should be made with a great deal of thought and prayer." (page 184)

I recommend you get SETTING BOUNDARIES WITH FOOD but don't allow this book to go unread on your bookshelf as one more weight loss product. Instead, read it carefully and take action on the wise counsel in its pages. If you do, then you will regain control of this important area of life.

The listing for this book came at the same time I had just committed to helping two people I love very dearly get on the fast track to a healthier life style through diet and exercise changes. I thought there might be something good in here for one or both of them. While, this was not necessarily applicable to either of them, it was a good read and would be beneficial to many ladies who struggle with a distorted view of themselves and life in general in this world full of "quick fix band aid cures".

Allison got my attention in the first sentence. She has been there. She was morbidly obese. She suffered abuse as a child and as a wife. She was a single mother. She was a successful model. She suffered depression and survived prescription and illegal drug abuse as well as a suicide attempt. She knows the emptiness of living without the Lord and the Victory of being one of His. But what held my attention most of all was the way she addresses problems we can't solve with all the knowledge in the world of diet and exercise. She deals with attitude. She analyzes view point. She reaches to the aching spirit.

In the end permanent changes for good health (or any difficult transformation) comes down to one thing... You have got to want it enough to stop making excuses. You have got to believe you are worth it. You have to believe you hold the power to overcome the obstacles. And only with the Lord is any of that possible.

Fad diets come and go by the dozens a day but not one of them will ever work for permanent change. I constantly find myself shaking my head at some of the attempts I see those around me making at a quick fix to their weight or health issues.

Weight loss has been a goal of mine for several years. I have made very little progress. Now that I'm pregnant, I've put it on the back burner.

Reading a book about setting boundaries with food, I figured I wouldn't be able to put its contents to use until after baby comes. I was wrong. This book tells you what you've been told all along -- that you must eat less and exercise to lose weight. You must also eat healthy to be healthy. We all know that, yet some of us continue to have weight issues.

What's beneficial about the book is the additional convincing and motivation information it provides:

The other reasons for bad food habits and weight loss
How to get out of the rut and make real progress to lose the weight and/or be healthy
Hearing about another person's life struggles and journey to success.
I look forward to implementing the parts I can while I'm pregnant and continuing with the rest after baby boy comes.

***Special thanks to Ginger Chen of Harvest House Publishers for sending me a review copy.***

Thank you Allison for sharing your personal, painful journey with us. This book was so helpful to learn that my weight problem was a symptom to the boundary violations I have be subjected to. It is so good to know that I can love my way back to health and get my comfort not from food. God bless you.

Although this is not my struggle (I struggle with a great many other things!), I did resonate with Allison's story. Many, many folks who have had difficult upbringings turn to something to fill them all the way up, whether it be with food, sex, admiration, success, or anything really. Allison peels away the layers of why we reach for that piece of chocolate cake, and why it seems to have power over us. And then she adeptly points us to the One who can fill us all the way up: Jesus.

Allison has done it again! Her latest book hits us all where it hurts - with a firm but gentle kindness - as we struggle with food/weight issues. Her treatment of this difficult subject, based on personal experience, is not to batter the food-extremists in our world but to, in a Christ-like manner, address the problem with great spiritual insight and optimism. I totally recommend this book by a superb writer and lovely lady who wants to help us all. And now, Allison,......shall I have that cookie or not!?!!
