3.0 out of 5 stars Tropical Aquarium Week by Week
It is a good book but it is strictly for people that have never had a aquarium and are just setting it up or haven't yet.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE best general freshwater aquarium reference I've read., March 30, 2005

This is a great and complete reference for the beginning to experienced aquarist. Excellent photos demonstrate what the text explains. The author not only introduces the more difficult technical procedures for keeping an aquarium, but clearly explains how to implement them and the natural processes they affect. I also particularly enjoyed that the author frequently discusses the latest innovations and equipment for the home aquarium. If there was one book for the aquarist that I would recommend, it would be this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lighting systems, cleaning and filtering systems, fish choice and feeding plants, October 12, 2005
This review is from: Setting up a Tropical Aquarium Week by Week (Hardcover)
There are plenty of books on the market which discuss the home tropical aquarium, from choosing fish to maintenance: so what makes Stuart Thraves' Setting Up A Tropical Aquarium Week By Week so special? It's his weekly focus on the project, from day one to week 12, which offers step-by-step clear instructions on how to correctly set up a tropical freshwater aquarium. Lighting systems, cleaning and filtering systems, fish choice and feeding plants: all are given photo embellishments and very clear direction.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book if you're going to use live plants, January 9, 2008
This review is from: Setting up a Tropical Aquarium Week by Week (Hardcover)
I got this from a local library. Its very good. The author sets up a single tank in the beginning and by the end of the book (week 12) it is fully established. The book is great for people who want to use real plants in their tank.

Theres a big section with various plants arranged into four categories: background plants, midground plants, foreground plants, and floating plants. There are full color pictures on every page. Various species are pictured and described. The fish section is arranged into three groups: first fish, second fish, and third fish. (First fish should be added to the tank first, second fish should be added second, etc.)

The only problem I had with this book is that there is too much emphasis on plants. Personally, I am more interested in animal life and less interested in the plant life. But if you're a beginner and you want to have real plants in your tank then you will love this book. If there was an updated, cheaper, paperback edition, I'd probably buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for beginners, December 4, 2005

This book covers different topics from tank setup to maintenance. It is a well written book with a lots of pictures. Anyone can get a lot of information from internet, however, this book gives the best coverage of planning a beautiful planted aquarium step by step. I wish that I could read this before I bought my starter kit.
While this is a great tool book to own for a beginner, I do wish it can go a little bit deeper on some of topics.

This is a great book for a newbie like me. I've had fish before, but a long time ago, and I've never had a modern tank with modern equipment. This gives me a template to follow to have a functioning tank that looks like I want it to look, and works like I need it to work. I really like it!

I have had an aquarium before, it lasted a couple of months, and then everything went kaput. I purchased the book, read it, and have now set up a new aquarium, and so far so good! The author gives detailed instructions, and a timeline, which I really love. It also has a great section on appropriate fish, and whether or not certain fish get along, eat each other, etc. I feel more confident this time around with this book ready to answer my questions.

I just received this book the other day and have been reading it nightly. I had an aquarium a few years ago and I am having a big one delivered next week. This is specific about many subjects areas including a whole bunch of plant species I am interested in. I recommend it to at least the novices like me.

Very complete and detailed. Show a sequence of tasks to build a planted tank, stuff for work, types of plant and fishes.

I liked the part of how to treat wood and substrate.
