5.0 out of 5 stars In which word images are conjured with fine honed sensitivity and brutal surprise, June 3, 2007
This review is from: The Next Settlement (Vassar Miller Prize in Poetry) (Paperback)
Michael Robins has had his poetry published in the 'Boston Review', 'The Cincinnati Review', the 'Denver Quarterly', 'The Iowa Review', and several other lesser known journals. The first published anthology of his work, "The Next Settlement", won Robins the Vassar Miller Prize in Poetry for 2006. This is a compilation of meditative poems in which word images are conjured with fine honed sensitivity and brutal surprise. Original, lyrical, and highly recommended reading, these free verse creations showcase a unique and memorable voice in American literature. 'The Cows Go Mulling Home': I fed in your pasture, the others/were soured company to the sky.//I assumed the error of moths,/your pastoral broad as the moon//while the cats fray a low grass,/birds taking up the form of wings.//Having one long key for the gate,/I might resist the heated fence//where expectation sets on the lip,/catches within the nest of the throat.//I considered proof of my flight,/that you'd be quite pleased to see.
