Very nice and well made.

It was a constant struggle to keep the the pieces in the frame without having them pop the edges or slide under other tiles.

To preface this review, I have played Settlers of Catan for years, using the minuscule Portable Edition, the current edition of Basic Game, and the 10th Anniversary 3D game sets before. When I saw the 15th Anniversary game set was being released, I was very excited to wait for a copy. However... I'm not entirely satisfied with my purchase.

First, the box itself: It is very nice, and the finish is beautiful. However... at minimum, it could have benefited from a small bit of felt in the bottom of each slot in the box. It could have also benefited from wider card trays that "sit" correctly within the box... the flimsy plastic card trays that are included are not as wide as each opening in the box, so it creates a sort of teeter-totter effect unless you balance all of the parts in the box juuuust right.

The board itself is fairly nice. I would have appreciated real true wood tiles, instead of wooden particle board, but the fit & finish is still good on the individual pieces.

The resource and development cards are the very same size and sort of cards you get with the standard retail Basic Game -- just with different art on each card. I was hoping for slightly higher quality cardstock or even the nice woven nylon-like textured cards, and I was somewhat disappointed to find just the standard cards.

I did note that there are typo's on each player's Building Tiles, instead of "Longest Road 2VP / Largest Army 2VP", the tiles actually read "Longest Road 2SP / Largest Road 2SP". The actual award tiles for Longest Road and Largest Army are, however, correct.

Overall, I would have been extremely satisfied with this game set if I had paid approximately $70 for it (e.g. double the regular Basic Game cost).

When this edition promises: "Now you can create Catan out of wood" what they mean is - now you can make Catan out of MDF that doesn't fit together as well as 4th edition cardboard. Add in the typos on the building card and the set feels like corners were cut to make a price point, and the tradeoff isn't worth it. At $70 it might be a reasonable value - at $110 I wish I'd taken a pass.

Great game - poor value in this edition.

Let me preface this by saying that my family absolutely loves playing Settlers of Catan. I bought the 4th edition last year and it routinely hits the gaming table every week. Since this was the most popular board game in our home, we decided that we would get this new edition. I should probably mention a certain bias: I picked this game up for $90, not the MSRP.

Part of this edition is the fact that everything is wood. The box is very well built but there are a couple things worth pointing out. The slot for the tiles is long enough to fit all the tiles including the 5-6 player expansion. This was somewhat problematic for us since we usually only play with 3-4 people and sorting out the tiles every time we want to play is somewhat of a hassle. Obviously, this is subjective, but the way around it was to have the regular tiles in the longer slot and the extra tiles in one of the compartments. Unfortunately, this does leave the tiles floating more loosely. Another potential flaw is the card tray. From my understanding, the inclusion of the german cards was last minute and not designed for the US box in this release. The german cards are the smaller stock (similar to ticket to ride)! There is also a spelling error on the "building costs" tiles. Since we have played enough to where we don't need them, my OCD can tolerate it :) The numbers do not show the probability of being hit with dots under them, but rather with different number sizes (6s are bigger text, 2s are smaller text). This is definitely harder to see but since we have played the game so much, it didn't really matter (looks better, just not as functional). Additionally, there are not letters on the numbers for the recommended setup.

UPDATE: I still enjoy playing with this set and, after having made the modifications detailed below, it is far superior to the other offerings, like the conventional 4th edition with its terribly designed puzzle-style border. I picked this up when it was about $100 and now the price has gone up to $300. That should tell you that this is a really good set. If you are willing to put in a little time to fiddle with the box, get new bags, etc, and have the $300 to spend, then this boxed-set will not disappoint.

I learned to play Catan on the old 3rd edition board with ocean tiles instead of the puzzle-style interlocking border (found on the 4th edition). The old style board is far superior, because long, thin pieces of cardboard are inevitably going to warp and you end up spending most of your time fixing the board instead of playing and interacting. When my roommate moved out, taking his games with him, I decided I had to get my hands on the old style board.

I searched the internet and was able to find 3rd edition boards, but the only 3rd ed. expansion I could find was about $90 used! I found this box set and decided to buy it. I was excited about the wooden tiles and the single box design. Things I do like include better art on the tiles, the thickness and heft of the tiles, the details on the wooden pieces, and the fact that it all comes in one box (instead of two). Unfortunately, there are a few small issues.

First, the wooden number discs are not lettered, so the rules instruct you to lay them out randomly. This seems like it would lead to a less-balanced game, so I am going to letter them myself on the back of the discs.

Second, the cards are smaller and there is no box for them.
