Book Description

0781259045 978-0781259040 January 1, 1993
Originally published in 1900 as Early Settlers and Indian Fighters of Southwest Texas, this volume has been praised by reviewers for more than a century. J. Frank Dobie said it is "meaty with the character of ready-to-fight but peace-seeking Texas pioneers."

Joe B. Frantz, renowned Texas historian, wrote: "Sowell has a feature writer's eye for a good story and his sensitivity for change of pace and mood."

The author was a native of Texas, a Texas Ranger who used a pen as well as he used his gun. His readable volume describes Indian fights and the activities of famous Texas Rangers in detail. Included in these accounts are first-hand recollections of Texas Rangers Bigfoot Wallace and Benjamin F. Highsmith and Mrs. Hannah Berry's description of her encounters with Davy Crockett and Josiah Wilbarger.

The reprint edition is a replica of the original 1900 volume, complete with a new index added when State House Press published the book as Texas Indian Fighters in 1986.

5.0 out of 5 stars Texas Indian Fighters, April 6, 2000
By
Ellen Kay Compton (Albany, Oregon USA) - See all my reviews
Texas Indian Fighters is a fascinating, must read, book of the Old West. Whether one is interested in Texas Rangers, Outlaws, Indians, or just the Old West in general, this book is a must. I have more than a passing interest in it so I'll buy it. My relative, William Frederick Schmalsle, was a Buffalo Hunter, Indian Scout, Guide, and Courier for Lieutenant Baldwin and General Miles. All were involved in the Red River Wars and the rescue of the German sisters. Thus I find this book especially interesting, a great bedtime book, whether read in a house or by a campfire. Or just about anywhere one finds time to read and relax. This book is one that one can't put down easily, until it is read and reread thoroughly. It is well written and researched carefully, with an excellent dialogue. The author certainly has a knack for knowing his audience and produces an excellent tale, with verbiage which doesn't bore one and is in keeping with appropriate language.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Anyone Interested in Texas History, December 27, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book is a must read for anyone interested in the turbulent and dangerous history of the young Republic of Texas, as well as those who have ancestors, like myself, who played an important role in the decisive battles against Mexico, as well as with the long conflict between settlers and the Native American population. I read extensively, and must admit that each page of this valuable book is filled with vast amounts of historical, genealogical and other pertinent information. This book came recommended to me by a family member, and I was pleasantly surprised to read so many accounts of our (Winters) family in the book.
