5.0 out of 5 stars Rising star...Wait for the crossover
Antonio Iannini de Bogota, Colombia SEUL by Garou (Pierre Garand) is probably one of the best albums I own. The songs "Gitan," "Seul," and "Au plaisir de ton corps," are great. "Criminel," and "Gambler" add a sexy touch to the CD. "Jusqu'à me perdre" is an awesome song by canadian singer/songwriter BRYAN...

I like the first song, 'Gitan', very much, but the rest of the album is basically standard, histrionic Euro-pop, very much like Celine Dion, Eros Ramazzotti, or Laura Pausini. "Criminel," and "Gambler" add a sexy touch to the CD. "Jusqu'à me perdre" is an awesome song by canadian singer/songwriter BRYAN ADAMS. "Sous Le vent" an amazing and surprising duet with Céline Dion. Who left her vacations aside to give encouragment and suport to this great artist and last but not least a track called "Que l'amour est violent" a track that feels just like a song by famous Jim Steinman. Once again, the team held by Humberto Gatica, Vito Luprano, Luc Plamondon, Aldo Nova, Erick Benzi, and with the management of René Angélil created and amazing Album, and the voice of Garou it's incredible. His influences by jazz and blues are present so as the soul of Quasimodo. An amazing new star with a bright future on his way. Don't miss it!

I like the first song, 'Gitan', very much, but the rest of the album is basically standard, histrionic Euro-pop, very much like Celine Dion, Eros Ramazzotti, or Laura Pausini. 'Sous le vent', in fact, is a duet with Dion. To give you an idea of his approach: Rene Angelil, Dion's husband and manager, manages Garou. Like Ricky Martin, a lot of Garou's appeal is based on his physical attributes (which are considerable.)
However, I like his voice - it's low, growly, and sexy. He definitely can sing, and belts out these pop songs with a lot of emotion.
Garou is a French-Canadian singer from Quebec who sings in French. The French lyrics are included in the packaging (thank you, Sony), without any English translation. His first wide exposure came when he played Quasimodo in the musical 'Notre-Dame de Paris', and 'Seul' is his first solo album.
The cd's sound quality is very good, and the musicians are fine. The voice is great; I just wish he had chosen to sing different songs.

Buy it!! That's all I can urge you to do to experience a musical experience that goes way beyond enjoyment!!. Garou's deep, husky voice tints every song with a hint of naive sexuality. The best song on the album is "L'adieu" with it's heart-wrenching lyrics which will not leave you dry-eyed even if you don't understand French. "L'amour est violent" has hints of Jim Steinman/Meatloaf and the tender duet he sings with Celine Dion "Sous le vent" shows the vocal variety and emotional range displayed by this newcomer to the musical world. Garou is a rising star who will rank with people such as Bryan Adams (Adams also wrote one of the songs on this album) and Sting. The songs differ in beat, melody and atmosphere and there is something for everyone. Get it: you won't be sorry!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great French-Canadian Singer!!, June 22, 2005
This review is from: Seul (Audio CD)
I first heard this man sing, about four years ago, on a world music award program. It took me two years to find who it was, and sang the song "Seul". And I am so glad that I kept looking!
Garou has a truely unique voice; very powerful, manly and a little rough. Even if you don't know French you will enjoy the feeling he puts into singing, and once you know the lyrics it will be that much better.
If you really want a treat watch his live concerts, either the last tour on DVD, "Garou live a Bercy". Or his just finished tour on "Routes".
I love all his work and highly recommend all three albums!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great album!!, June 29, 2003

When I studied in France in 2001, Garou was huge (maybe still is?) and you heard his music everywhere. Now everytime I listen to this album, it brings back fond memories. I love almost every song on this album (not too fond of Criminel and Gambler though). You'll love this album too if you're into pop ballads like those of Celine Dion. The lyrics are so beautiful, but even if you don't speak French, the music alone is worth buying the album. Garou has a very unique, sexy voice (and image :-)) and I would say that this album is definitely worth your money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Garou in Chains?, February 2, 2006
This review is from: Seul (Audio CD)
My predecessor made a very pertinent remark. Garou is an exact opposite of Ms Dion. He started his career in Quebec barrrooms as a soul/R'n'B singer and his covers of the classics (like Wilson Pickett's "Mustang Sally" or "In the Midnight Hour") are really stunning. And even the standard, "Celine-like" pop songs of this collection, he gives them - thanks to his unique voice and passionate delivery - a new quality. He is decidedly better then most of his material (my favourite being "Adieu" - his interpretation makes me think of Jacques Brel). I consider him a great singer, one of the best I ever heard and it's a pity he associated himself with Ms Dion/Mr Angelil. The reason fot it is very simple - they promised him an international career. But his second - anglophone - album enregistered in 2002 and announced several times was never released and it looks like he made all those concessions for nothing.
And for better, more sincere, Garou one should turn to live "Seul avec Garou" and his second francopohone album "Reviens".

5.0 out of 5 stars just another review, April 7, 2003

Garou is an extremely talented singer! It was his role in Notre Dame, which is brilliant by the way, that led me to listen to Seul. His voice is low and gravelly but it's beautiful and pure masculinity in my opinion. Perhaps some of the songs on the album are a bit too "pop-ish" but give the man a break - it's his first album and I think he did a great job with it. Anyway, the songs aren't as important as the way he sings them - with a lot of passion and heart! I'm enjoying it :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Garou is Great, February 22, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Seul (Audio CD)
This is a superb example of exellent song writing, wonderful singing and great arrangements. However, be warned that Garou has a gravelly voice and if you're expecting something "pretty" you're going to be sorely disappointed. With that said, I love his voice: It's so quintisentially French and his interpretations are examples of really fine musicianship. I've listened to this CD many times and I'm hoping this amazing singer will be better known. I look forward to his next CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent first solo album..., January 26, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Seul (Audio CD)
For those who remember the French musical hit Notre Dame De Paris, Garou sang the original(and exceptional)Quasimodo. His voice is incredible, although the solo album sound is quite different than the NDP sound. Some of my favourite tracks: L'Adieu, Je n'attendais que vous, Seul, Gitan. Highly recommended, I think this artist will become one of the new French stars. One can only hope that the English speaking audiences will grow to appreciate French music :)

Garou has an amazing voice, I never met anyone who didn't like his songs. All his tracks rock, but the best track in this album is definitely "Seul". If you liked Pascal Obispo's music, then you will love Garou.
