Editorial Reviews

In tracing Georges Seurat's theory of art and its application in his major paintings, Homer has woven every bit of evidence relating to the scientific influences on the work of Seurat into a carefully organized and clearly presented exposition.

The author's approach has been to study those scientific source which influence this artist.. Chevreul, Helmholtz, Rood, and Henry ... extracting appropriate quotations relating to color, or to expression and harmony in Seurat's art. Each of Seurat's great paintings is in turn analyzed to determine what use he made of such scientific theory and how if influenced his technique and composition.

The work of William Innes Homes in bringing this history of the development of colour awareness to the public is of textbook proportion. For any serious artist and/or art enthusiast it encompasses a major turning point in the development of the capacity to see with a new pair of glasses. The Science of painting is NOW on the threshold envisioned by Seurat, which prompted the statement, "All that we do in our work, will one day be mathematical."
To be part of the on-going development of Neo-Impressionism into Chromo-Luminarism and beyond, is exciting and rewarding and having this book is a comfort in times of doubt and indicision... Thank you Professor Homer.
