Book Description

July 3, 2007

Do our dogs experience the equivalent of infancy and puberty?

Do they go through the terrible teens or struggle with midlife crises? And what can we do to ensure they take each step in stride? In The Seven Ages of Man's Best Friend, bestselling author Jan Fennell leads us through the key phases of a dog's development by uniquely defining the seven ages of our dogs: the buoyant, boundless energy of the Puppy and the Pioneer, the troublesome teens that are the ages of the Playboy and the Protégé, the difficult middle years of the Pretender and the Protector, and the twilight years of the Pensioner. The book offers advice on all the problems that crop up at particular times in a dog's development, including training and vaccinations as well as puberty and parenthood.

In The Dog Listener, Jan Fennell changed the way we think about our dogs. Now, Jan once more challenges conventional thinking and puts forward an alternative view of the dog's world.

5.0 out of 5 stars good overall guide to owning a dog, December 20, 2007
By

This review is from: The Seven Ages of Man's Best Friend: A Comprehensive Guide to Caring for Your Dog Through All the Stages of Life (Paperback)
This book covers everything from your first day with your puppy to dealing with old age in the dog, training suggestions, the "forgetful" adolescent, things to watch for healthwise at different ages of the dog. I found it to be a good basic guide for living with a dog and have bought a number of them to give as presents to present and "maybe someday" dog owner friends. The training basics show you how to communicate in the dog's language (canine) so it understands what you want it to do and will willingly follow your direction. Friends have been pleased to find how quickly their dogs have responded to the training. I had used many of the same principles starting 14 years ago with my dog and understand now why they worked, and she was a polite, well-mannered dog.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but more on old "dominance" concepts, February 26, 2011

This review is from: The Seven Ages of Man's Best Friend: A Comprehensive Guide to Caring for Your Dog Through All the Stages of Life (Paperback)
An up and coming trend in dog training and behavior is the redefinition of Alpha (see studies done by David L. Mech) and the use of positive re-enforcement type techniques. This book does NOT keep up with those.

In terms of defining life stages, it is interesting, however the training style is not something I would use. I prefer those of Jean Donaldson, Patricia B. McConnell, and Karen Pryor.
