5.0 out of 5 stars This is a truly inspiring story!
This is a great movie for the entire family. The film is based on a true story about seven children who continue on the Oregon Trail after their parents die. Set in the 1840's, the story will appeal to all ages with its adventure, humor, and warmth. A true display of the pioneer spirit!

3.0 out of 5 stars The musical score to Seven Alone was first rate!
As a family film, Seven Alone provided every element required by a discriminating viewer. I would argue, as a lover of exceptional film scores and a collector of soundtracks, that this film is greatly enhanced by the truly beautiful music of Robert O. Ragland. I give the film an A+ because of the impact the music contributes to it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Seven Alone, December 15, 1999

This is a true story about seven children who lose their parents while enroute to Oregon in 1843. Their eldest son manages to to complete the trip and fulfill their parent's dream. The movie does take some liberties with the real story such as the death of Henry Saget. In reality he was killed by a buffalo stampede and not a knive wound. It is unfortunate that MickeyTo in Toronto isn't familiar with American history. More information on this true story can be found by researching information on the Oregon Trail.

My 11 year old son heard the story read to him in school and they watched most of the movie, when I happened to find it for rent at a local family bookstore, I brought it home, it's one i would definately add to the family collection. It doesn't get more real than this if you're interested in Oregon Trail stories.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, Solid Family Viewing, June 26, 2005
This review is from: Seven Alone (DVD)
This film is much better than I expected it to be. The story line offers something a little different from the usual fare of "going west" films. It has its share of drama and jeopardy, but it's a safe family story, the cinematography is good, and the theme music is well above average. (Pat Boone sings the opening and closing song.) Well worth watching.

4.0 out of 5 stars View of a Journey through the Oregon Trail, June 17, 2005

This review is from: Seven Alone (DVD)
An 1840's teenager, John Sager, leads his other younger siblings on a journey through the Oregon Trail after the untimely death of their parents. With the pure drive to succeed and stubbornness, the weary bound children finally reach their destination. This movie gives an excellent example of the importance of responsibly and being true to your word. I would recommend this movie for all ages.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good teaching tool, April 30, 2003
This review is from: Seven Alone [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I used this film to illustrate the dangers of the Oregon Trail to my 8th grade history students. It is an interesting dramatization of the perils of traveling the Oregon Trail. The film does an excellent job of portraying the journey on the trail. It is very entertaining and kept my students interested.

Unfortunately, the film sugarcoats the reality of the result of the Sager's journey. Two of the Sager boys were massacred with the Whitmans instead of going on to a homestead in Oregon, as the film implies. The girls were adopted out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great classic!, July 11, 2011
This review is from: Seven Alone (DVD)
My grandmother, Nanie, purchased this movie for my daughters and immediately, I recalled fond memories of watching it as a youngster. Nanie would round us up and take us to the theater for the Saturday matinee, which of course wasn't complete without Butterfinger candy bars!

Anyway, back to the movie...Despite the cover, it isn't an animated cartoon, but rather, Seven Alone is a great family movie and a history lesson all in one. It's an older movie, so the quality isn't what we have grown accustomed to with today's movies, but it's a must-see classic nonetheless. It is based on the true story of the Sager children, who became orphaned and traveled on the Oregon trail to fulfill their father's promise of homesteading there. Katherine, the oldest daughter, kept a diary of their adventure and how they later came to live with the Marcus and Narcissa Whitman missionary family.

There is much to discuss in this movie, including selfishness and disobedience on the part of the oldest child, John Sager. There are some scary parts, so caution is recommended if viewing with small children.

All in all, this movie was just as good as I remembered it years ago. I highly recommend it!

I got this DVD for my 8 and 6 year old boys. It was one of my favorite movies in elementary school and I was thrilled to watch it again. We all enjoyed it. Of course the quality of the video is OK since it is an old movie. But really, it didn't seem any different than the quality of the original.
