Book Description

The Seven Ancient Wonders of the World were built during a period that spanned more than two thousand years. Their size, design, and craftsmanship were without equal in the ancient world. And their legendary grandeur remains with us to this day. Of the seven, only one is still standing. However, drawing upon historical descriptions, Celia King has reconstructed all of them in miniature splendor. Brief historical descriptions are accompanied by magnificent collage illustrations that literally leap from the page and evoke the richness of a long-lost time. This is a jewel-like treasure that readers of every age will turn to again and again.

Editorial Reviews

Review

--KIRKUS REVIEWS, December 1990
An unusual pop-up book that celebrates a forgotten item of cultural literacy: seven colossal monuments (including the Colossus of Phodes, from which that word is derived). Of the seven, only the Great Pyramid at Giza still stands. A brief text introduces each wonder; the pop-ups are handsome and cleverly designed, impressionistic rather than realistic in effect. An intriguing curiosity to pique interest in this sidelight of history.

--SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL, May 1990
From the kingdom of Egypt to the Golden Age of classical Greece, the seven ancient wonders of the world are ingeniously portrayed in this appealing and instructive fine-art pop-up book. Captured in magnificent full-color illustrations that literally leap from the pages, here is an entertaining look at history's best know monuments.
