K-Gr 3-An attempt to instill positive character traits in children through fablelike stories. The themes dealt with are teamwork, cooperation, accepting differences, duty, helpfulness, courage, and making choices. The stories themselves, while having a loose Old Testament connection, are not strictly Bible-based. At times, the authors border on trite, e.g., naming the oxen pulling the Ark of the Covenant "Meepul and Yupul" (Making Choices). Cartoon illustrations appear throughout; textless double-page spreads alternate with spot art. Three or four questions at the end of each story help readers identify the major points of the lesson. William Bennett's The Children's Book of Virtues (S & S, 1995) uses existing folk literature and poetry to exemplify similar virtues, but does not have a religious bent. The Bogots' collection would best be used in a parochial setting to reinforce religious teachings.-Mollie Bynum, formerly at Chester Valley Elementary School, Anchorage,
