Book Description

July 1, 2001
You know you're fine. Plus, you have a decent job, a nice place to live. You're smart and ambitious. So, where's your man?

Because you're so well pulled together and without a partner, you may have developed an attitude toward men. Believe it or not, men can sense what you think of them. For instance, when you meet a man do you evaluate him as a possible partner or do you think of him as a potential friend? If you become open to him as a friend you may learn something from him that will forever enrich your life. Or he may ultimately become your lifelong partner or introduce you to him. The key is openness, and you can't be receptive to love when an attitude creates a barrier around you.

Renowned relationship therapist Audrey B. Chapman identifies the subtle attitudes Black women harbor that prevent us from finding love and happiness. Without even knowing it we can be controlling, materialistic, cynical, desperate, and even hostile. Chapman shows us how to take time for ourselves -- to figure out the exact traits we're looking for in a man to enable relationships to become learning experiences, not jumping-off points for developing resentment. She tells us how to evaluate potential partners so that we don't repeat the same mistakes. She also offers insightful and refreshing tips on how to meet and marry the man of our dreams.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Desperate MeasuresIf Terry McMillan's Waiting to Exhale were a self-help book, it would be Seven Attitude Adjustments for Finding a Loving Man by Audrey B. Chapman (Getting Good Loving). Her no-holds-barred, get-real point of view is already familiar to Washington, D.C., listeners to her radio talk show. Based on her therapy practice and myriad statistics, Chapman addresses issues unique to relationships between black women and men, and advises women about how to overcome the "seven deadly attitudes" and how "to tell the difference between a brother who is available for the long haul and one who's only there for a hit-and-run." Agent, Madeleine Morel.

Bebe Moore Campbell With compassion for both genders -- and a lot of common sense -- Audrey B. Chapman leads the discussion on how Black men and women can move from destructive relationships to healthy loving.

5.0 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL, SOUL-SEARING READING FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO CHANGE, August 1, 2001
This review is from: Seven Attitude Adjustments for Finding a Loving Man (Paperback)
Ms. Chapman, in her customary, down-to-earth, humorous style, breaks down the problems that have plagued Black men and women's relationships through the ages, how they have contributed to the deadly attitudes on both sides and how we can work on ourselves---and with each other--to overcome them. Throught lists, charts, statistics, exercises and the emphasis on personal empowerment, Ms. Chapman tells us both that ultimately, we BOTH have a lot of work to do, but that it is not impossible, and that we do need to step up to the plate for ourselves and for future generations. Yes, the title is a turn-off, but don't let that deter you from using the knowledge in this book to make your relationship w/ the opposite sex---and yourself---better than you imagined possible. Excellent, excellent book. Audrey is to be praised.

I thought this book was good. The advice was helpful, but I was not totally convinced that the author was actually in the dating mode. I would prefer a more modern approach similar to that of LaDawn Black in Stripped Bare: 10 Tested Truths for Landing the Very Best Black Man.

4.0 out of 5 stars Read, Learn and Grow !, September 30, 2008
This review is from: Seven Attitude Adjustments for Finding a Loving Man (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book. It help identify self-sabortage habits I had unknowingly developed with dating black men. Surprisingly, I became aware of the material value I was willing to endure to gain but yet paid a bigger price later down the road when the relationshp ended. It was sad yet healing to see and understand the cycle of emotional and psychoogical abuse from childhood events.

The book was paper version of her radio show, which I listen to faithfully every Saturday. I am better equiped emotionally to see certain boobtrap and avoid them for healthier and peaceful person.
