More About the Author

I am currently the manager of the Home Brew Department at the South Royalton Market, South Royalton, Vermont. I was manager of the Home Brew Shop at the Seven Barrel Brewery, West Lebanon, New Hampshire, for about 8 years in the late 90's and early '00's. I co-wrote the Seven Barrel Brewery Brewers' Handbook with the late Greg Noonan, and I am the author of North American Clonebrews.

I was a feature writer and regular columnist for Brew Your Own Magazine for a number of years. I have been brewing my own beer and making mead, wine and cyder since 1990. I am also a National Beer Judge, certified by the BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program). In addition to all that (!) I hold a PhD in French and spent about 20 years of my life as a high school French teacher...

I brew about once a week, pretty much year-round. Generally I brew all-grain, but will occasionally brew with extracts when experimenting with yeasts or exotic ingredients. When I am not brewing, racking or bottling, I am writing a series of historical novels. I am a life-long New Englander, so naturally I am a huge Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics and Bruins fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars How Many Barrels?, March 16, 2005

Well, shame on me for not paying atention to the other reviews . . . I am a very experienced home brewer, considering making the jump to professional, and I thought the book would have information about brewing in a Seven Barrel Brewery--i.e., making seven barrel (220 gallon) batches as opposed to making 5 gallons. Some how this is book # 13 about brewing that I bought, not book # 1 or 2, and that affects my perspective about the book. I think it is a fine book for the beginning or intermediate brewer, with the caveat that some of the info is a bit dated (the book is 9 years old) and the availability of hops, yeast and grain varieties is much greater these days. As a second book after Palmer's How to Brew, it would be a fine starting point and it does have a lot of recipes.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not described well, February 2, 2011

As a home brewer I was looking for a book on commercial / micro brew pub info. A seven barrel brewery is a specific engineered brew system that brews 7 barrel batches of beer at one time. I was disappointed that this book had nothing to do with describing the workings of a 7 barrel system / brewery as I was putting together a business plan to open a commercial brew pub. So it was an overpriced beginner's book for recipes and techniques to home brew. Much better books on the subject I already own.

I love the way this book approaches brewing. Read a friends copy and had to have my own so I could highlight and mark it up.
