Book Description

April 15, 2003

For many Latinas, fighting depression is a lonely, life-draining battle. Afraid of being considered crazy or loca, Latinas go to great lengths to deny the toll depression takes on the quality of their lives and their relationships. Whether it enables the recognition and understanding of depression in themselves or a sister, best friend, or cousin, The Seven Beliefs opens the door for healing in a poignant, powerful way.

The Seven Beliefs shows Latinas that confronting and overcoming depression is possible if they look at each aspect of their lives, step-by-step.

The Seven Beliefs begins with a call to Believe in Yourself, which lays the groundwork for all the other beliefs. Readers are subsequently asked to Believe in the Signs, helping to clarify the difference between feeling the sad aftereffects of a hard day and standing at the edge of the emotional abyss generally associated with clinical depression. Readers are also shown that they must believe in the health of their Body and Spirit, and that a strongly rooted sense of Hispanic cultural Traditions can often act as a built-in support system, innate and enduring.

In a friendly, easy-to-read format that combines medical guidance with traditional wisdom, The Seven Beliefs encourages Latinas to confront depression in an assertive and empowering way. Using stories and letters from patients they have encountered, the authors show readers how to take charge of their lives so that they can become physically, emotionally, and spiritually balanced women.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

With depression "tantamount to a four-letter word" in Latino communities, Hispanic women struggling with the disorder may suffer silently instead of seeking help, say the authors of this gentle guide. Lozano-Vranich, a psychologist and mental health columnist for Latina magazine and others, and Petit, director of Psychiatric Emergency Services at New York's Mount Sinai, outline seven beliefs (in yourself; the signs of depression; change; your body; your spirit; traditions; and the future) they say will help Latinas understand and combat depression. With testimonials from women who've gone through their own struggles, motivational tips, suggestions for therapy and an encouraging tone that recognizes-and celebrates-a Latina's unique cultural identity, with its "mix of traditional values and modern power," this book is an excellent and encouraging primer. An extensive list of recommended readings, hotlines and organizations points readers to further resources.

A wonderful integration of a medical/psychological and holistic/spiritual understanding of depression in Latinas. The last chapters provide excellent recommendations. The first ones explain depression in a clear and interesting manner. I have suggested it to two patients already.
