Seven Days in Utopia, based on the best-selling inspirational book Golf's Sacred Journey: Seven Days at the Links of Utopia, by David Cook, shows how a person's personal journey can be given a jolt in the unlikeliest of places--even a lowly golf course. The actors, including Lucas Black, Robert Duvall, Kathy Baker, and Melissa Leo, are absolutely stellar, pouring their hearts into this unusual story that on the surface is simple, but is as profound as any human experience an inch or two below that surface. "How can a game have such an effect on a man's soul?" says Duvall's Johnny Crawford in the voice-over at the beginning of the film. Seven Days in Utopia proceeds to attempt to answer just that. Black plays a talented young golfer named Luke who chokes during a tournament, and becomes so despondent that he tries to crash his car. It just so happens that the site of the crash is in Utopia, Texas, near the private links of a retired pro, Crawford, who takes the young Luke under his wing. From Johnny, Luke learns to trust his gut and hone his focus, yet in Utopia, he learns something more: that God is present in every endeavor, in every small act and 10-cent town on earth, if one will only open one's eyes and heart. Seven Days in Utopia is an old-fashioned family film in the best sense, like Touched by an Angel meets It's a Wonderful Life. And there's a little twist in the experience, too: as Seven Days in Utopia reaches its moving climax, viewers who want to know the rest of Luke's story are directed to a website to find the answer to the cliffhanger. I love all kinds of movies and watch everything from dramas to horror movies. But sometimes the overload of the Hollywood language and gore machine just gets old. That's why it's so pleasant and refreashing to happen upon just a really good, feel good, poinant movie like Utopia. I literally stumbled across this movie as I was searching the theater's local listings. I don't think they advertised a lot, and that's a shame because I think a lot of people are going to miss this hidden gem.

Utopia does have a Christian themed message, but it's not the "beat you over the head" kind. It's really just a good life-lesson that would apply to anyone anywhere, regardless of religion.

Add Utopia to the list of movies (Remember the Titans, Secritariat, The Blind Side) that prove you can have a well done, enjoyable movie without all the typical Hollywood violence and language.

Best family movie to come along in a Long time.
The advice given in the movie is the best.
Saw this movie twice and cannot wait to buy it.
The critics gave it a bad rap because there was no wild violance, cursing, sex content, ect.

Every person I saw this movie with, and I saw it in the theater more than once with several different people, said the same thing, they loved it and wanted to own it on video. Recently, I talked to a woman whose son worked as a crew member. He said the crew didn't have high hopes for this modest-budgeted film at the time, and they were all surprised at just how good it turned out to be when it was released.

It's a feel-good movie about accomplishing dreams that makes a person want to see it again and again. They even make golf interesting. The faith aspect of it is sweet and comforting and never mushy. The scenery is beautiful; the characters are great; Duvall is the best! He rides his horse on the golf course! Have the Kleenex handy, it will touch your heart.
