Book Description

August 16, 2011
NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE starring Robert Duvall and Lucas Black This book is about influence and inspiration and a deeper, more profound way of looking at life. The story is based on thousands of athletes who author and performance psychologist Dr. David Cook has counseled, and the great mentors and teachers from whom he has learned. Told through the lives of two characters---an eccentric rancher with a passion for teaching truth, and a young golf professional at the end of his rope looking to escape the pressures of the game---they represent each one of us in our various stages of growth. And through them we are reminded that, in life, we must be willing to coach and be coached. Life is never the same once you've been to Utopia. 'Read it. Devour it. Keep it as a reference book. You'll be glad you did. Golf's Sacred Journey is a remarkable and encouraging story with an entirely different approach on how to succeed in your golf game.' ---Zig Ziglar, leading motivational expert and bestselling author 'This book is full of wisdom that will enhance your game and I believe it just may change your life.' ---David Robinson, NBA MVP, 1992 Olympic Gold Medalist, Two Time World Champion

et me start off by saying I am not a golf fan...In fact I am not a sports fan at all. I actually chose this book for review with my husband in mind. So when I received it I let him read it first. It had been some time since my husband had picked up a piece of fiction to read. Over and over he told me that I needed to pick up the book and read it. So when he finished it that is just what I did.

Amazing!! Absolutely amazing!! I was blown away. This is one of the best books that I have ever read - honestly. I think my facebook page was over loaded with quotes as I read it. In fact one of my friends posted: "I see your reading a new book". I could not help but pass along the nuggets of wisdom woven throughout this book!

At one point Johnny asks, "Is it tradition you seek, or truth? Is it excellence, or acceptance? These are the questions of greatness. These are the questions that must be answered if a man is going to lead a revolution." On the face of the statement and in context with the book the reader may think this simply applies to golf - However, upon deeper contemplation and the fact that Johnny's faith is silently woven, like a scarlet thread, throughout his golf instruction - the reader discovers the depth of the statement. In fact - these are the very questions all Christians need to ask themselves. And if it is truth and excellence we seek then we must be prepared to be different.

I will say this story ends with the most powerful presentations of the gospel that I have ever read in a fictional work! I cried my eyes out and even suggested to my husband that we ought to have a cemetery of lies near our church. A physical reminder that we are dead to the old life and risen to a new life in Christ. Absolutely stunning!! Seriously makes you think.

This is a must read!! Don't just settle for the movie, though I have heard it was great - and I am anxious to see it. If you only see the movie you may miss some of the things that this author was trying to get across that won't come through in the movie. Plus there is something about the written word that soaks into a persons self and causes one to look more closely, to contemplate the truths upon the page.

Thank you Zondervan for this review copy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story, for many will be life changing August 28, 2011

I can not imagine that anyone - especially golfers will not enjoy this book. So many of us define ourselves by how well we score and hit a golf ball. David's story will impact you and how you see the game for ever. If you are searching for more in terms of your faith, you will find it here. I am excited to see the movie and hope they can do the book justice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Be careful or it'll flank you. April 26, 2012
Format:Paperback
I'm actually not a fan of a book that suggests one topic and then covertly grows into something else, which is the case with this book. We start with nothing but golf and by the end of the book we discover that this is all about Jesus Christ, and our walk with God. Perhaps God can use this book to reach into the lives of a few souls that otherwise would never turn back to Him, but it may have the opposite effect on someone who thinks they are reading one thing and end up with another, and permanently running away from God.

The story itself is rather simplistic, and in some way or another we can all relate to being completely broken and needing a spiritual pick me up. That best describes what the intent of this book is.

The golfer who is looking strictly for a fix for their game will be completely turned off by this book, while someone who came looking for golf, and ended up coming to the Lord, will recognize the deeper meaning of it all.

It's tempting enough to try this book on a few golfer friends of mine who otherwise would never ever discuss Jesus Christ. And like the old cliche goes, if your neighbor's house is on fire, would you not try and rescue them? That is what is on the minds of any Christian who cares enough to share this with an unsaved friend or loved one. Hopefully the recipient sees the motivation for what it truly is, love.
