5.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars, because 4.9 won't do, November 12, 2004
This review is from: Seven Easy Pieces Ep (Audio CD)
The Detroit Cobras obviously love their record collection which must be very large and full of delightful obscurities from many decades. All their records are freshly recreated cover versions and here they tackle (in order) Melvin Smith (a local singer), the Olympics, Gloria Jones, the Kingston Trio, the 5 Royales, Dorothy Love Coates' Ninety-Nine And A Half Won't Do (not the Wilson Pickett song, as so many reviewers seemed to think) and Koko Taylor, all played with passion and verve. To make it harder to fathom their origins, they change or miss-spell some of the song titles or composer credits or omit them completely so some detective work went into finding the above list of names, but this is part of their charm. Great stuff

4.0 out of 5 stars Only 7 songs, but they're gems, November 23, 2003

If you have their other cds and, like me, simply CANNOT get enough, well, then, YES, you DO need to get this CD. 4 terrific rockers, 1 slow soulful, 1 (maybe)gospel-rock, and 1 that defies description (Insane Asylum has a male vocal until Rachel chimes in as powerfully as usual)

I made a "Best of" cd for my car stereo and picked 5 of these 7; not a bad payoff for the purchase (and then stuck the other 2 songs on at the end, anyway!)

4.0 out of 5 stars Let's roll!, May 8, 2003

Original? Maybe not very, but high-quality, rootsy rocky R&B doesn't need to be. It just has to be good and sincere. This is.
Only seven songs, but enough variation on the album. And all songs are more than 'okay'.
A short album, but fortunately there's a 'repeat-button'on my CD player.

How can you not love a band that specializes in loud, raucous covers of R&B B-sides, and has a all-out soul sister singing them?

Great fun garage rock, incredible rhythm section, and Rachel Nagy is my heroine. Best Summer Party records EVER!!!!

You've never heard of the Detroit Cobras? What a shame. This group out of (you guessed it) Detroit is a traditional rock and roll group covering oldies you have never heard, in a way you have never heard. Fronted by a female lead singer with a gritty but perfect voice, this group ROCKS! But more than that, they're FUN - every song they do is just great fun - perfect party music.

I was turned onto this group by my wife, who has seen them play live (and met the singer in the bathroom afterward). After hearing how much she loved them, I bought all the CD's I could find of them, and we love them all. Highly recommended - you won't be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great if you dig them, October 30, 2004
This review is from: Seven Easy Pieces Ep (Audio CD)
If you are a fan already, you will love this album. It's basically just a continuation of their other albums. A lot of people don't dig what they do, but they are a lot of fun.
