Book Description

October 1, 1994 3 and up
In Thaler and Smath's exuberant variation on an old counting rhyme, seven irrepressible little hippos persist in jumping on the bed--each to fall off and bump his or her head, each to be treated by the doctor, each to be put to bed by Momma. When all seven hippos are in bed and the doctor is gone, it's time for the riotous conclusion to this good-natured counting book. Full color.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-1-- If you are expecting a great new rendition of the classic "jumping on the bed" rhyme, this could disappoint. One by one, seven anthropomorphized hippos suffer Saturday-morning-cartoon-style injuries (crashing through the roof, out the window, etc.), while jumping on the bed. Their mother, badly in need of assertiveness training, does nothing but panic and call the doctor, but the children continue to ignore his prescription--"No more little hippos jumping on the bed." Bandaged and looking contrite, the younger family members finally seem settled, but no sooner has the doctor driven off than they start a jumping frenzy that literally brings down the house. Right down to the final surprise (which makes the little hippos seem rather thick-headed after all their injuries), this book offers a lot of goofiness and not much story. Such a well-loved rhyme deserves more than greeting-card art, even though the illustrations do have their funny moments. The predictable plot, bright colors, and simple counting theme may redeem this title for libraries short on unbridled silliness. --Lisa S. Murphy, Dauphin County Library System, Harrisburg, PA
