Entertaining and believable., September 22, 1998
This review is from: Seven of Nine (Star Trek: Voyager) (Paperback)
Hooray for Christie Golden! As much as Jeri Taylor strayed from canon in "Pathways," Golden sticks like glue to it in this book. Canon references abound throughout, and there's even one delightful reference to Seven's role in the WW II simulation during the Hirogen takeover ("Seven's holodeck stint as a cabaret singer when the ship was under the command of the Hirogen was something of a legend on Voyager. The role had been so out of character for her, it had made more of an impression on the crew than Tuvok's bartender or Chakotay's American soldier.") If you enjoy this sort of thing - which I do - then buy the book! Canon aside, the story is a completely original Seven tale, with a compelling plot that weaves hatred and a desire for revenge around a twist that includes Seven and *real* memories from her time as a Borg drone. These memories assault her so viciously that she attempts suicide to stop them. Ravens also appear, but to learn whether they are good or evil, you gotta read the book!

A most pleasant surprise., March 11, 2002
This review is from: Seven of Nine (Star Trek: Voyager) (Paperback)
Unlike most of the Voyager novels, I didn't rush right out and buy this book the day it was released. Contrary to the norm, I am not much of a Seven of Nine fan. I like Jeri Ryan very much, but I just felt the character was drastically over used, and frankly, I was tired of her. But, I am a devoted Christie Golden fan, and am unable to resist anything written by her. As usual, she did not disappoint. This book is without a doubt about Seven of Nine, but Ms. Golden wrote it in a wonderfully creative manner that included all the characters. She has a knack for capturing the essence of the Voyager characters that makes her writing a sheer delight to read. The same is true of this book. The story is engaging, the aliens are creepy, and Seven is interesting and very, very likable. Those are words I do not say easily, believe me. This is a terrific book! Even if you aren't part of the masses that think Seven is the best thing since peanut butter, you'll enjoy this story.

An extremely well done Voyager book!, July 21, 2002
This review is from: Seven of Nine (Star Trek: Voyager) (Paperback)
When Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) joined the cast of Voyager I thought she was a great addition to the show. Not unlike other people though, I felt she was way over used to the detriment of the other characters and their development. So it was with this trepidation that I approached this book. However, knowing the quality of Christie Golden's past works I jumped right into the book. What a wonderful surprise, Seven on Nine is an absolutely brilliant book with a great plot line and really good villains. In my opinion, past trek books with insectoid species were not done very well. In this the author uses an insectoid species and does it very well. Without giving too much away, let's just say that Seven of Nine is an absolutely great story that is hard to put down. If you've not read it yet, you need to. Unfortunately it appears to be out of publication already. It's definitely worth a little extra money to order this one through [other sources]! Thank you to the author for this one.
