Shallow, uninspired, and soulless in every respect,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Rod of Seven Parts (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Tomes) (Hardcover)
The characters are shallow at best, at their worst, unintentionally irritating. The storyline is just as bad; cliche plots are common in fantasy, but this one is exceptionally uninspired. The writing itself is, for lack of any better terms, soulless and mechanical. Dialogue sounds as though it's been revised a hundred times and consequently sounds totally unrealistic. This is one of the least involving books I've ever read; I kept turning the pages, but only to get the darned thing over with; this is one book you can't help but start skimming through towards the end. I've heard some great reviews for other Douglas Niles novels, and if they're to be trusted at all, he must have really been asleep at the wheel while churning out "The Rod of Seven Parts." Sometimes I get the impression that TSR is willing to publish any book written by one of their staffers, regardless of how bad it is. No wonder TSR has had serious financial troubles in recent years...

The Rod Of Seven Parts is one of Douglas Niles best pieces of work.It shows the forever prominent struggle between Law and Chaos, and encompasses the story of the main weapon in the fight,a weapon of Pure Law...The Rod Of Seven Parts...The book folows the trail of the hobbits Kip Kayle and Saysi Formilly as they take on a perilous journey to stop the queen of Choas from completing her task of realising Miska, the Warlord Of Choas and her consort...they are Law's only hope...
