Winning is not the only thing,
By
This review is from: The Seven Secrets of Successful Coaches (Paperback)
An excellent resource not only for coaches and those involved in sport activities but also for parents and educators. Janssen and Dale talk about the importance of team building and the real reasons most kids get involved in sports: to have fun and to have social opportunities, among many others. That is not to say that winning is unimportant but rather that it is only one aspect of involvement with sports. A must read for parents and educators who believe winning is the ONLY thing.

A Great Tool,

This review is from: The Seven Secrets of Successful Coaches (Paperback)
This is very good. Well written, easy to follow, and very practical applications for yourself and your team. Most of this stuff I am going to implement or had already implemented. For any beginning coach, or coach that is struggling with reaching your players, you must have this book. If your team is underachieving, this book will help. The references to successful coaches and their experiences is really a positive. The one funny about this book, is how much it refers to Gary Barnett in a positive light. This is kind of ironic based on what is happening to him right now... Coaches should buy this book...

Winning is IMPORTANT - but HARDLY the only thing!,
By
This review is from: The Seven Secrets of Successful Coaches (Paperback)
The authors take a very unusual view of what makes coaches successful in a tough profession. Believe it or not, they argue that credibility, not winning, is the key to be successful! What a novel, but true, concept.
This well written book addresses the issue of credibility and why it is the key to success for a coach. The authors then address seven key areas that coaches must be skilled and credible in. A great book for parents of athletic children to read as well - it provides great insight on what is important in athletics and how to pick a coach for a child. This book is helpful to an experienced coach, a coach who is changing jobs, or a coach just starting a career in the profession. While my copy was published in 2002, it is still completely relevant and I hope the book remains in print, or is released in a new edition, for many years to come. I was given this book for Christmas and I am very glad it was. I have been coaching youth sports for almost ten years and found this book to be very thought provoking. It made me think about where I have come from as a coach and where I want to go. It provided me with tools to assess my coaching and taught me many things I have applied directly to my coaching style. I suggest this book for any coach at any level of the game.

Bible for any leader,

This review is from: The Seven Secrets of Successful Coaches (Paperback)
This book, as well as all books by this author, are excellent. They are obviously an good resource for its intended audience of coaches, but it is also useful for any leader. I consider, and recommend this book to others, as my bible for leadership. It is easy to read and understand. The concepts build logically and interact well with each other.
