Book Description

January 15, 1997
Over a four-year period, the authors profiled hundreds of professional women, both household names and others less well known but no less successful, to discover the key ingredients of their rise to the top. In this eye-opening book, the Brookses spell out the skills these women share - and provide specific action steps any woman can take to apply them to her own life and career. This book is not written just for superstars, but for every woman who wants a satisfying career, balance in her life, recognition and reward for her contributions, and some assurance that she can survive in today's unsettled corporate or professional environment. It's a guide for aspiring women at any level - from entry level right on up to CEO.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

After carefully studying hundreds of prosperous businesswomen, coresearchers (and twin sisters) Donna Brooks and Lynn Brooks identified a handful of specific skills and practices that were common to those at the top. Their Seven Secrets of Successful Women shows how finding a mentor, increasing visibility, understanding office politics, and other such activities can be employed for personal and professional advancement.

From Library Journal

After interviewing hundreds of professional women, the authors (both researchers) distilled "seven secrets" that successful women share. These women all realize the importance of a mentor, know how to increase their visibility, know how to develop a good network, learn to communicate effectively, balance home and work, know when to take smart risks, and understand the politics of the organization. Chapters give examples of what each strategy means and how to implement it and ends with a summary and action plan. While not offering anything especially new, this book can help everyone, and not only women, begin their journey toward achievement. Appropriate for all libraries.?Susan C. Awe, Jefferson Cty. P.L. 4.0 out of 5 stars A useful book for all working women, October 4, 2000

The first point that is interesting about this book is the acceptance of the differences between the attitudes of men and women regarding their obligations at home and at work. Realising how we have been brought up, in a way that makes networking, taking risks or finding mentors much easier for men, is an important step towards changing our own attitudes that stand on our way to achieving our goals. One more point of interest is that the book addresses women not only in the corporate sector, but its concepts can be easily applied to all areas of emloyment. The book is highly readable, with many examples and success stories. For those of us using vision aids, note that the book's lettering is well thought of, not large print but comfortable, which makes reading less complicated than the usual overcrowded format used in business books.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting But Wordy, June 16, 2005
By
shopgal (Kalamazoo, MI) - See all my reviews
The Seven Secrets are thought provoking, but the Brooks sisters take 274 pages to say what could have been said in 100 pages. Also, the chapters veer off topic and spend considerable time discussing unfair treatment of women in the workplace.
