anthony braxton playing standards? and playing them straight, and recognizable if you know the songs. anthony braxton is argumentatively the premiere proponent of free jazz, certainly no one approaches what he's done for free jazz composition, what often sounds like noise on a saxophone and causes many would be listeners to question if he even knows how to play a horn. so if nothing else, seven standards prove he can play, which isn't much of a surprise for anyone who has heard him on dave brubeck's all the things we are. seven standards was recorded by windham hills records, and that's another incongruity, anthony braxton and windham hills records. but believe it or not, it's a good fit, this is a recording of relaxing, soothing, ballads by braxton. sure, it's anthony braxton doing easy listening, but the selections are smooth and when the moment is right, this is pretty good music for that mood.

anthony braxton on alto sax
hank jones on piano
rufus reid on bass
victor lewis on drums

Anthony Braxton, one of America's premiere avant garde music pioneers, has always been an engaging soloist and partner in a variety of jazz groups. These extended takes on the American songbook and jazz classics reveal an energized Braxton working with a wide canvas of emotions, modes, ideas and interplay. Well worth the price of downloading.
