The landscape shifts from hidden archaeological mysteries in London to a fantastical stay in an old house in Yorkshire, and from Clissold Park in North London to Roslyn Glen in Scotland, where the narrator gets invited to prepare extravagant desserts for an aristocratic family. Shaun Levin's first novella is an unforgettable portrayal of a relationship between two men, and of a desire for integrity that slowly tears them apart. I really loved this book, and have continued to dip into it since the first reading. Shaun Levin's prose reminds me of poetry with the same immediate emotional kicking effect. There are some images that stick with me - the couple in love who should be paid for the joy they bring other people, the way the woman the narrator is jealous of appears in everyone he meets or hears about, going for a walk with Socrates. Great erotic sex scenes too - he is one of the few writers I've read who can write about sex without it either being pornographic or workaday. Have tried some of the recipes too and they work - an added, unlooked for bonus!!
