Book Description

8 and up3 and up
In this exciting tour of the ancient world, Callimachus, Royal Librarian of Alexandria, is researching a new book and decides to take his young apprentice Philip on his Mediterranean journey. As Philip marvels at the most breathtaking and beautiful buildings, gardens, and statues ever built — at Giza, Babylon, Olympia, Ephesus, Halicarnassus, and Rhodes, he knows that he will remember this trip for the rest of his life. But when they sail home to Alexandria, there is one more surprise waiting. Mary Hoffman's storytelling, based on the latest research, blends with M.P. Robertson's creative reconstructions in this inspiring introduction to the ancient wonders.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6–Told as a story passed from Callimachus, the librarian at Alexandria (a bona-fide person, circa 310 B.C.E.), to his young servant Philip (a fictitious character) as they travel to five of the seven sites, this narrative bends and twists as a conversation between the learned elder and the young initiate. And so readers learn of the ancient marvels a bit subjectively and at times with childlike awe. For this reason, the book is more suited to recreational reading than for extracting information, or as a pleasing depiction to begin a unit or spark family or class discussion. A map of the ancient world with the wonders identified is included and an afterword gives basic factual summaries of all seven sites. The pages are decorated with small, serpentinelike borders that lend an older air, and watercolor illustrations reconstruct each wonder with an eye to majesty. More direct versions include Diane Bentley's Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (Oxford, 2002) and Lynn Curlee's Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (Atheneum, 2002), which offers a "legend" comparing the scale of the wonders to the U.S. Capitol building and the Statue of Liberty.–Harriett Fargnoli, Great Neck Library, NY

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for younger kids, May 3, 2009
This review is from: Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (Paperback)
I purchased this book for my second grader when we decided to do a history fair project on the 7 wonders. She really enjoyed the fact that is book is a story and also has beautiful pictures. It did a really good job of helping a young child visualize the wonders and brought something ancient more to life for her. I would recommend this book to anyone who wanted to teach ancient history to younger children.
