From the Author

In searching for a practical guide to organizations, communities, and different levels of employees, I became frustrated and overwhelmed with the ongoing questions of what is really going on here and what actions to recommend and take. No comprehensive frame existed.

Furthermore, there was no linkage of personal, professional, and organizational realities. Most seminars and consulting focus on one or two of these dimensions and rarely, if ever, put them together. Then too there is the "fad-of-the-week," that was very popular in the past but no longer resonates with employees. I now challenge mission and vision statements, people fixing, authenticity as "walking the talk," spirituality and other popular notions. I offer alternatives that actually work and make an enduring, positive difference.

I took on the challenge--built a comprehensive map to explore different worldly realities, figure out what is really going on and what to do that fits appropriately in different contexts, and match personal, professional, and organizational realities.

SEVEN ZONES FOR LEADERSHIP will guide you into your organization, your function and yourself. It will let you figure out what leadership actions to take to build an enduring and robust organization for the long term. It will also help you assess the contributions of many thinkers in the field of leadership, assess organizational interventions and probe deeply the toughest issues of leadership like courage, fear, and hope.

I hope you benefit from this provocative and comprehensive inquiry into leadership--an amazing concept that opens a window into life that will stun, amaze, and encourage you to understand and live authenticity every day inside yourself and outside in the world.

He completed over a decade as Senior Fellow and Director of the Reflective Leadership Center at the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota. He maintained close working ties with the University, especially with the Reflective Leadership Center and the Executive Development Center at the Carlson School of Management.

Bob was known for his ability to craft long-term leadership programs inside organizations and to link skilled professionals in teams to address critical organizational issues. He also built a reputation over the years as one who brought depth of content, playful energy and an engaging sense of humor to his leadership education.

~Create an organizational assessment tool, grounded in his research and theory that provides 360 degree feedback to organizations.

~Design long-term leadership programs inside companies that actually make a profound positive impact on the organization for the long term and address the serious emerging issue of succession planning and leadership development.

~Develop executives into an effective group that strengthens each other and builds the effectiveness of the organization and group as a whole.

~Distinguish coaching from mentoring and offer both when requested.

~Press the boundaries of spirituality in the workplace and explore theology in workplace, as a deeper alternative, without reverting to religion.

~Conduct Myers Briggs for 1000 people in the same room at the same time.

~Build a firm that can deliver the most advanced leadership design and education programs available in the United States and internationally.

~Have fun and enjoy every day.

Bob died on September 20, 2002, from complications of ALS/Lou Gehrig's disease. He was 64 years old.

This review is from: Seven Zones for Leadership: Acting Authentically in Stability and Chaos (Hardcover)
Bob Terry is the brightest and deepest thinker I know about leadership and organizations. He was preaching, teaching, and modeling authenticity long before it became popular. His new book, "Zone Leadership" is a comprehensive model that brings together all the "tools" that are out there and organizes them in an understandable way. Most of all, the point is made that leadership comes from within the heart and mind of the leader and the tools are just that--tools, to be used by wise, aware, mature, and courageous women and men as they lead in a chaotic world.
