Good intimate show that comes through on the Cd. Great song selection for an acoustic setting. Much of these i had not heard in the acoustic form. Good Cd any samples fan shoudl add to their collection.

Great Song Selection,

There are some great versions of some very good Samples songs on this CD. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the versions of "Last Summer" and "Who am I" are. Sean's voice takes a few songs to warm up, but that is part of the charm. The guitar work on Seany Boy is great. This CD sounds best a bit louder than usual, so that you can hear all the guitar work along with Sean's voice.

Unique storyteller and musician,

Having lived in Denver for over fifteen years at one time and grew up along with "The Samples" music, I can honestly say that they're a great party band. But when Sean gets acoustic there's a magic that happens that's almost indescribable. His stories of the things in his life that are meaningful are things most of his listeners relate to from their own experience, too. I miss treking the mountains of Colorado and Seany Boy always takes me back to my days of serenity and yes, party. A very good CD.

Sean Kelly is a Major Talent,
This review is from: Seventeen (Audio CD)
It's too bad that they don't base the cost of the CD on the number of really outstanding songs on the album because when you pay $16.00 for albums like this, it feels like stealing! If you are a hard core Samples fan drawn by the scene and the fun, up, reggae/pop format you might be dissapointed by this album as the acoustic context in which the songs are presented bring out the more emotive and reflective nature of Sean's songwriting. However, I believe that it is within this context that Sean truly shines as an artist. Sean's style of songwriting has a unique way of using a series of very simple words or phrases to paint a very vivid picture, convey a very complex thought or feeling. The emotional resonance of his vocals bring a very dynamic quality to his music that is just incredibly satisfying to listen to. I believe the true strength of his singing/songwriting has been obscured in the past by the reggae/pop/rock sounds produced by the Samples and it really seems that this album showcases Sean as a mature artist, a major talent, and hopefully one who will be around for quite some time as he has much to contribute. You should also buy the DVD of this album too! :)

Acoustic Music At Its Best!,
By
This review is from: Seventeen (Audio CD)
I had never heard of The Samples, and one day I was browsing through the "S" section of a record store and came across "Seventeen". I decided to listen to a few tracks before buying it, and I really liked what I heard!
The melodies are lovely, the guitar playing superb, and the harmonies are beautiful. If you like acoustic music at its best, I highly recommend this CD. My favorite tracks are "Losing End of Distance", "Streets in the Rain", "Blue", and "Who am I?", but there is not a single bad song on this album. If I could give it 10 stars I would! |
