LITTLE is known about the life of the German novelist Johann Jacob Christof von Grimmelshausen (1622?-76), partly because he himself was secretive about the circumstances of his early life and liked to hide his identity under a dozen pseudonyms, such as German Schleifheim von Sulsfort, which appears on the title page of his most famous novel, Der abenteuerliche Simplicissimus (The Adventurous Simplicissimus), published in 1669.
