large collection of varying quality, February 21, 2010
This review is from: Seventeenth-Century Dutch and Flemish Painting: The Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection (Vols 1 & 2) (Hardcover)
This catalogue of seventeenth century Dutch and Flemish paintings in the Thyssen Bornemisza collection (located in Madrid) presents 128 examples. The paintings are presented under subsections such as still life and flower pieces, portraits, scenes of daily life, lake and river scenes etc. There are some interesting and worthwhile works by the likes of Rubens, Kalf, De Hooch, Hobbema, Jacob van Ruisdael, Saenredam and van Dyck. There are however no pieces that might be considered masterpieces. This volume would be of interest to the completist of art works of this era and those collecting the series cataloging the fabulous Thyssen Bornemisza collection. As usual in this series the printing and reproduction qualities are well above average.
