This was considered one of the heaviest recordings of it's time back in the 90's. Master, the brainchild of Death Metal legend Paul Speckmann, formed a brutal onslaught....

"On the 7th Day..." is a classic release. If you enjoyed the 90's Death Metal scene, and listened to the likes of Death / Obituary / Malevolent Creation / Slayer / Cynic / Massacre / ect ect, you should buy this without hesitation...

If you can find it. This is one brutal offering you need to hear....

This is a classic death metal album,which was created in 1992.Paul Speckmann is a great man and this album is a top in Master's discography.Better how Collection of souls.

By the time Master unleashed "On the Seventh Day God Created Master" in 1991, they were hardly a new band. Vocalist/bassist and the band's only constant member through the years, Paul Speckmann, had actually been experimenting with various line-ups and permutations of the band (including Death Strike) in and around Chicago as early as 1983, exactly the same time as other genre originators such as Mantas/Death and Possessed.

So therefore the style you hear on "On the Seventh Day" is death metal in its original, mid-'80s form. This album probably could have just as easily been made in 1986 or so as 1991. With one exception, the fact that it was recorded at the ultimate mecca for death metal studios in the early '90s, Tampa's Morrisound, under the capable hands of Scott Burns. Morrisound was responsible for all the best sounding death metal albums of the period and this ranks as one of Burns' crowning achievements.

From the onset of this disc, the opening track "What Kind of God," you are brought into a dark netherworld and introduced to what may be the most brutal sounding death metal guitar tone you are ever likely to hear, courtesy of session guitarist Paul Masdival of Cynic/Death. The drums of Chicago area skinsman Aaron Nickeas are also quite pummeling and always precisely played.

One of the best songs on the album is track number three, "Heathen," which features lyrics from Speckmann taken directly from Revelation 9 about the coming apocalypse. The brutality achieved on this track is just indescribable. And it was all done without the help of more contemporary diluting death metal influences that everyone else at the time was using like gurgling vocals and blast beats. Coming from the early days of extreme music, Master even incorporates a nice subtle hardcore punk influence into their sound on some of the riff structures and reverb on the guitar. One example is the ultimate classic here, track number eight "America the Pitiful," an obvious take on the traditional patriotic hymn "America the Beautiful," but done in Master death metal style. Classic and remarkably catchy. I actually have a tradition of making sure to air this one on every 4th of July, just to get myself in the mood of the season.

I am happy to report that this long overdue reissue on Holland's Displeased Records features the original mix but with a truly stellar remastering job. It sounds louder and overall 10 times better than the original (which I also own) and really brings out the brilliance that was always there more clearly. Also included is a bonus DVD disc constituting two complete European shows from the early '90s. The sound/video quality is passable but there is unfortunately no way to navigate to certain songs without having to view the entire thing, which I was disappointed by. A small gripe though to see a band that has so rarely played the U.S., even back then.

At the time of its release this album was rather poorly promoted by Nuclear Blast and since its style wasn't in vogue with the current flavor of the moment at the time for death metal, it failed to garner the recognition it deserved. Maybe now with this reissue it will be looked at as the timeless gem it really is. Act quick though, as even the reissue is now becoming harder to find and may soon disappear from availability. A true death metal classic and a personal favorite.

Great album but Bu*y the 1985 unrealsed album instead!!

The 1985 unrealsed album by MASTER has the infamous 85' demo which is in my opinon is the most extreme thing of that time period and the most infulential to EXTRME MUSIC!! VERY MUCH LIKE REPULSION!!..and about=to ''reign in blood'' but the two are very different!! MASTER had a more loose feeling to the music than SLAYER though..I bet SLAYER heard this demo as well and may have used it as a speed uper..because the unrelased 85 alubm by MASTER is heavier than ''HELL AWAIT's''..ok anyways
