2.0 out of 5 stars Ammonia Free, but Streaks!

This review is from: Seventh Generation Glass & Surface Cleaner, 32-Ounce Bottles (Pack of 6) [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging] (Health and Beauty)
I have used Baby Gantics and Mrs Meyers products in the past but have found that the Seventh Generation cleaning products are superior.

I read the previous review about streaked glass issues. I am from the philosophy that streaked glass happens from user error. Insert non-helpful review vote here. Seriously though, even if there is a film, simply go over the mirror with a dry, soft cloth and the problem goes away.

This cleaner works best with a cloth. Paper towels pretty much defeat the purpose of a "green" cleaner anyway.

Like all natural cleaners, this one does take a bit of elbow grease on super-tough stains. It does a wonderful job on glass and even my walls. Any film that it leaves is because it was not wiped down thoroughly. I've done that myself. Go back over with a dry cloth and the film issue is resolved.

The walls that enclose my stairs are white. I have little kids who use the walls to assist them going up the stairs. The walls get dirty often. I was able to spray the walls and get them bright again with very little effort. All the dirt was gone and my paint was left in tact. Very impressive.

I use the Free and Clear formula and there is no odor at all.

Awesome product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product-- no streaks, September 8, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Seventh Generation Glass & Surface Cleaner, 32-Ounce Bottles (Pack of 6) [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging] (Health and Beauty)
The other reviewers notices streaks after using this cleaner-- I think I know why. It's not the 7th Gen, it's the window cleaner they used previously.

Mainstream glass cleaners leave a coating on the glass when they dry. This waxy layer must be removed before natural cleaners will work. The easiest way to remove the coating is to wash the glass once with a mild dishwashing solution-- warm water with a tiny squirt of dishsoap. After the coating is washed away, the 7th Gen will leave your windows squeaky-clean without streaks from then on.

This really is a good product. No fumes, no weird chemicals... just clean.

This cleaner is a staple in my home. I have three children and a huge dog, and do A LOT of cleaning windows, mirrors, even door frames and handles. Using a cotton cloth and wiping until the window or mirror is dry, there are no streaks. It does a beautiful job. However, a quick swipe with a paper towel will leave streaks in its wake. If your priority is a healthier environment, in and outside, this is your window cleaner. If you're looking for a fast swipe, use windex.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clean and Green, August 15, 2010
Seventh Generation is a small Vermont company that specializes in environmentally friendly products. According to their advertising, this glass cleaner is "non-toxic, hypo-allergenic, biodegradable, vegetable based and contains no dyes or fragrances." Thus, it will not harm you. Not only will it not harm you, but it will not harm the seventh generation of your descendants.

I tried the cleaner on glass, granite countertops, and ceramic. The bottles have both a spray and squirt option. The cleaner does work. It cleans as well as other cleaners.

We still have to do all those other things that we need to do to save our planet, e.g., stop climate change. Whether you buy this or not depends on how much you value the environmental friendliness of the manufacturer and the product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Non-Toxic Window Cleaner, August 15, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I really like the Seventh Generation products, specifically their free and clear line, as I am very sensitive to fragrances and odors. I think this product does an amazing job of cleaning windows. I would urge anyone who uses ammonia based cleaners like Windex to make the switch, it is not worth the impact on you, your children, and your pets health.
Another alternative is to use a mix of vinegar and water- that is less expensive-but doesn't get the shine that this product does.

I use flour sacks to clean with and they work great. They save money because I throw them in the washer when Im done and I don't thrown away tons of paper towels. I save those for really messy or germy cleanups.

This cleaner is pretty good considering it does not have a toxic smell or a masking smell. It is gentle but gets the job done. I've tried to cut harsh chemicals out of my household and this seems to be the best I've found.

I love this product! I have been using this ever since I purchased 2 large glass tables for my home and I am amazed at how well it works. I decided to use more natural products when I moved into my new home, after discovering, while I was living in a condo, that the harsh chemical products that seemed to work well at first also permanently damaged my furniture over time, not to mention the horrible smell every time I used them. I was expecting the natural products to be inferior to the chemical products, and was ready to put up with some extra effort/steps. But I was so pleasantly surprised at the result and now I am converted! This stuff is awesome. It cleans so well without the nasty smells and doesn't irritate my skin AND after 4.5 years my furniture still looked like I've just purchased it!! This is so worth it for me.

Seventh Generation came recommended from Amazon members, so I thought I'd give it a go and purchased this six pack.

I don't regularly clean my house since I hired a cleaning lady, but she complained constantly that the cleaner wasn't up to snuff. Ignoring her (since I purchased six of them), I recently had to clean my glass dining room table for Thanksgiving. Let me just say that I will be apologizing to her, since it was shocking how big the streaks that this cleaner left behind.

Since the primary purpose of a glass cleaner is to clean the surface without making it look worse, this cleaner has unfortunately failed. I gave it two stars since it's ammonia-free and supposedly less harmful to the environment. If you want a cleaner that is supposed to do its job, you would be best to avoid this one.
